Golf and Beer and Nostalgia
For this week, it's going to have to be Beer Saturday on a Wednesday! The good news is that our power is back up and running.
As you well know I enjoy a few pints, and I also enjoy golf. Well this weekend golf was a non-runner due to Storm Éowyn which was drastic here in Galway with winds of 185kmph and no beer either due to my continued participation in Dry January.
Missing golf has been tricky, as it is a great way to get outside for some much needed fresh air, but dry January has been a breeze to be honest and I’ve actually enjoyed doing it. January is a good month to knock it on the head in fairness, as there is very little going on anyway.
So this Beer Saturday Post will be another nostalgic one, where I look back on times gone by when I enjoyed a few pints, in this case Guinness, and it also brings in my love of golf. I could of course have skipped the Beer Saturday posts for January, but to be honest, they feel like part of my Hive routine now at this stage and I like to support @detlev’s weekly contest too, as I know how much work goes into it in background.
So as you’ll see from the hat in the photo above, a few friends and I played an Irish Golfer event last year at the K Club. These Irish golfer outings are fantastic and they always pick some of the best courses from around Ireland. The K club would be considered one of Ireland’s best golf courses and hosted the Ryder Cup back in 2005. You’d usually be looking at €100 - €150 to play here and sometimes even more, so the Irish Golfer rate of €80 was actually very reasonable. It didn’t stop there either. We were all playing for top prizes, including top of the range Taylor Made Stealth drivers and three woods and there were top prizes for longest drive and nearest to the pin also. The hat you’ll see above was also given to each of us, as well as golf balls, tees, divot repair tools and tonnes of chocolate bars, energy bars, drinks. It really was a top deal and the golf itself was excellent too and we had a fantastic day out. Here is a look at some of the fantastic prizes that were on offer:
Of course we stopped off at the nineteenth hole afterwards for some well earned liquid refreshments and to our delight, the Guinness was really good.
The clubhouse itself was really cool too and had some really cool photos on the wall of golf from back in the day, which I have shared below
There was also a cool photo set of Tiger Woods in his hey day. He is probably the best golfer to ever play the game of golf. Some might argue that it was Jack Nicklaus, but for me pound for pound, Tiger is the best that ever played the game. It’s a real pity about the extra marital issues and the injuries, as had he stayed more focused on his game he would have won 20+ majors in my opinion. That last Masters he won was absolutely unbelievable stuff.
Let me finish out the post by showing ye a few photos from out on the course to give you a feel for it.
Until next time Beer Saturdayorians...
