Beer Saturday #399 - Beer Diary in Portugal /

Hello beer friends, here is my post to @detlev's weekly Beer Saturday #399 🍺 Thanks a lot for hosting the fun challenge!

The #BeerSaturday Challenge - Week 399

When it comes to beer in Portugal, it's Sagres, but the first beer I tried was Super Bock, which I also saw everywhere. On the second day of our trip, we went out for some hearty sandwiches—Bifana and Francesinha—and I couldn't resist having a glass of beer. Super Bock is a crisp and refreshing beer of warm countries with just the right amount of bitterness. It paired perfectly with the food, and despite not having had much beer lately due to the cold weather in Germany, I found myself enjoying a light yet satisfying glass.

Crisp and refreshing Super Bock

At our hotel lounge, they served the non-alcoholic version of Super Bock, which my partner—who rarely drinks alcohol—tried. I took a sip, and it was surprisingly close to regular beer. Since I had been enjoying port wine every evening in Porto, I decided to try the alcohol-free version of Super Bock when we moved to our next destination, Cascais.

Non-alcoholic Super Bock

I had it with grilled cod, eggs, and potatoes, and it was a great pairing. However, in terms of non-alcoholic beers, I felt that Germany’s Clausthaler tasted even closer to the regular beer. Still, I enjoyed it, so no complaints there.

During this trip, we ate out more than usual, but in the end, we found ourselves in our usual pattern ... meals from supermarket 😅 We underestimated how quiet a beach resort can be during the off-season, and many restaurants around us were closed. So, we improvised a DIY dinner with groceries from the supermarket. Luckily, we were staying at a sports hotel for my partner that had a kitchen and cooking utensils—what a lifesaver!

I decided to make a Japanese-Portuguese ramen using Nissin instant noodles, sardines, and coriander. And of course, I couldn’t leave Portugal without having a bottle of Sagres. Since we had an early morning flight the next day, I went for the tiny 250ml bottle. It's so cute. I wish there is beer in this size in Germany!

As usual, I had a toast while cooking. Maybe I should have gone for the bigger bottle after all 😌

If I may say so myself, my spontaneous travel creation turned out pretty well. And it was the perfect match for the beer.

Perfectly paired beer and meal

Like Super Bock, Sagres is crisp but has a nice bitterness. Which one is better? I really can’t decide. Both are fresh and slightly bitter beers that pair well with hearty meals and snacks and warm weather. I love both.

If you ever visit Portugal, I highly recommend trying both Sagres and Super Bock.

It'll be 400th Beer Saturday next week. It's getting warmer but still cold in Germany but I couldn't help writing a post. I look forward to go for beer hunting ☺️

The #BeerSaturday Challenge - Week 399

Super Bock

Super Bock

Sort:

You are so right! Both options are very popular and similar, very light beers and with that small size that invites you not to stop hahaha. Because of family issues, at home we often have a few boxes of that little bottle you tried:

However, I think that of all the ones I've tried, the Super Bock Stout is the one I like the most, they even have a non-alcoholic stout that is also very good.

Food in portugal is very good despite how simple it is, I love the bifanas and it's a shame that even though you enjoyed the tranquility of off-season, you didn't have access to more restaurants. Unplanned trips are great and portugal is always a great destination.

Hey, if I did't get to read you I'd miss next week being that 400 milestone! Thanks for foreseeing me, it will be a pleasure to share a story!

You are living next to Portugal and have the minis. I envy you! Next time I try the Super Bock and the non alcohol version too. See you on the #400 the edition, Nina!

The complexion of the super bock beer is causing me high salivation over here and what you enjoyed it with us something you shouldn't have display here

Haha 😁

I've never been a big fan of non-alcoholic beer, probably because I've never found the right one. I always find them too sweet. What's funny is that I've never salivated as much as I did looking at your non-alcoholic beer.

I have to say, it's really well presented. I've added this beer to my list of beers by country, so when I go to Portugal, I can try it.

Hello!
I have not tried these brands. They seem interesting.
Cheers!
