Computer

Colin turned his back for a second and that was all it took. When he turned back the laptop was gone. Just like that like it never existed in the first place. He couldn't believe it. He looked around frantically but it was nowhere to be found. Someone had snatched it from right behind him and that person had disappeared into the night. People were coming out and going into the subway at the usual rapid NYC pace but there was no way to tell if one of them was the thief. No way he could confront everyone. It was impractical and even dangerous to do that. He saw a MTA worker checking the ticket machines and he ran up to him and told him about his stolen computer. The worker didn’t help or couldn’t.

He said “seeing that you were not robbed then there’s nothing I can do”. That made him livid and he blurted out.

“What about the cameras you can find the person using them.”

The worker watched him like he was mad and then he walked away without saying anything else.

“Just great”, Colin thought, “The bastard don’t wanna help me or maybe he is the one who stole the computer.”

What to do next he wondered. He had everything on that computer including photos, videos, documents and much more. And everything was lost now in the hands of some junkie thief who would sell it on the streets for peanuts to get his fix. Just great.

He started pacing up and down trying to figure out how to get the laptop back. No one paid him attention. This was nothing new to them and he didn’t care anyway. Yet no solution came and finally he walked up the steps dejected with no hope in his heart. Right at the top of the stairs was a red bag. It looked like it had just appeared out of nowhere. He walked right by it without a second thought then about 10 paces later he abruptly turned around and ran back to the bag. He grabbed it and walked quickly away without even looking inside it. When he felt he was at a safe distance he opened it. To his utter astonishment there was a brand new laptop in the bag still in plastic. His mouth went dry and his heart started beating real fast. Surely his eyes were playing tricks on him and he closed the bag. But then he quickly opened it again and the laptop was still there like a gift from the gods. He closed it again and walked slowly to the park trying to conceal the bag as much as possible. When he was safely in the park he sat on a bench took the laptop from the bag and placed it carefully beside him. He threw the bag away into the bushes and looked around to see if anyone had noticed. Fortunately only a vagrant was there but he was fast asleep on one of the benches. Perfect he thought. Now to find something to replace the bag. He knew exactly where to look. There was a rubbish bin nearby. He hid the machine within some shrub while he rummaged in the rubbish bin. He found a garbage bag filled with refuse and emptied it in the bin. Then he place the laptop in the bag and walked out of the park.

He sighed when he got on the subway, clutching the garbage bag like it was long lost treasure. And indeed it was. Somehow he had gotten his hands on the best treasure he could have ever hoped for, at the most opportune time. He smiled when the train started moving and didn’t stop for a long time.
