The Walpurgis Night
Walpurgis Night is a traditional European festival that can be traced back mythologically to pre-Christian festivities in the Harz Mountains.
In the course of Christianization, the pagan spring festival (Beltaine Moon Festival) was renamed to commemorate St. Walburga, which was celebrated on the first of May until the Middle Ages.

image.png
Goethe also incorporated Walpurgisnachtinto “Faust”. Its plot takes place on the Brocken in the Harz Mountains.

In Schierke at the foot of the Brocken, a big medieval spectacle with colorful hustle and bustle of witches and devils takes place every year on this date.

In my home town, everything that wasn't nailed down had to be brought to safety around the house on April 30th. Otherwise you could go looking for your things all over the village the next morning. Supposedly it was the witches who were up to mischief. But in reality, it was the young lads who looked in the night to see where they could find something to take it somewhere else. Garden doors were unhinged, wheelbarrows hidden, whole trailers pulled through the village. Most of the things were then found on the village square.

Many a young man was already busy the days before preparing the maypole for his sweetheart.

On the night of May 1st, this was then erected in front of the girlfriend's house. However, if you weren't careful, it could happen that someone else stole the maypole during the night and placed it in front of their beloved's house.

If the young woman wasn't quite so prestigious, it sometimes happened that she was given a tin maypole. It was then decorated with old cans. That was rather embarrassing for her.
