Wczoraj żona spotkała się z koleżankami, to ja miałem więcej czasu dla siebie. Była to doskonała okazja do dłuższego spaceru po moim mieście, chciałem zobaczyć, co zmieniło się przez ostatni rok, kiedy nas nie było. Nie spodziewałam się cudów, bo ostatnia dekada to czas najgorszych rządów. Po słabej kadencji partyjnego nominata na fotelu burmistrza obecny burmistrz miał być ratunkiem dla miasta. Niestety stało się zupełnie odwrotnie. Sam burmistrz miał tego najwyraźniej świadomość, bo nawet nie wystartował w walce o reelekcję. Spacerując wczoraj po uliczkach, które pamiętają Niemieckich gospodarzy, zastanawiałem się jakby te miasto wyglądało, gdyby nie zostało "wyzwolone" przez armię czerwoną w styczniu 1945 roku. Osterode, bo taka była niemiecka nazwa, poddało się bez większego oporu, nie przeszkodziło to czerwonoarmistom spalić ponad 70% miasta.

Ostatnią z ciekawych ulic, których fragment przetrwał "wyzwolenie" jest ulica Seweryna Pieniężnego, dawniej Elwenspoekstraße. Przy tej ulicy w jeszcze przed I wojną światową zbudowano kamienice dla pracowników kolei. Później do lat 90.tych XX wieku były one własnością PKP, wtedy to dopiero je sprzedano mieszkańcom na preferencyjnych warunkach. Nowi właściciele zostali między innymi z problemem wspólnych toalet na półpiętrze.
[ENG] The last of the interesting streets, a section of which survived the 'liberation', is Seweryna Pieniężnego Street, formerly Elwenspoekstraße. In this street, tenement houses for railway workers were built before the First World War. Later, until the 1990s, they were owned by the PKP, at which point they were sold to residents on preferential terms. Among other things, the new owners were left with the problem of shared toilets on the mezzanine floor.

Ciesz się, na Śląsku zostaliśmy z tą substancją mieszkaniową i teraz mamy całe dzielnice, których nie da się przystosować do nowych wymogów. Ani Armia Czerwona ani Polska Ludowa nie przyniosły dobrego zarządzania. A z gorącym kartoflem zostali niekoniecznie ci dobrze sytuowani.
Z tej perspektywy wkroczenie wyzwolicieli nie wygląda tak źle.
Wspomniane budynki są jedynym przykładem tego typu "substancji mieszkaniowej". Inne ocalałe kamienice posiadały już węzły sanitarne w mieszkaniach. Prusacy byli dość wygodni.
Nie zmienia to faktu, że trudno ocenić jak miasto by rozwijało się bez wojennych zniszczeń. Tym bardziej, że zostało zasiedlone przesiedleńcami zza Bugu, a Niemcy przegonieni.
