I've reached a point where I really need to clean up my house. I was once a slightly hoaring person and today I look at more minimalist environments with a little admiration. As I love to read, I started to consider buying a Kindle and asked some friends if it was worth it, as I didn't want to have new objects at home. For the research it is something that really pays off, even though I love the experience of having a book in my hands.
Days later a penny fell on me: I live next to an incredible public library! Before buying the Kindle I went to visit the place and left with my head made up: instead of spending, I'm going to start renting books there.
My trips to the São Paulo Library, in Parque da Juventude, have been one of the coolest moments of my week. It's an excuse to leave the house, walk around enjoying the trees, look for the available titles of my favorite authors and surprise myself too, either by discovering books I didn't know or by entering the circus show that is next to the library and I always wanted to see it - but it was always closed.
One day I'll tell you about this park, which was once a prison where there was a horrible massacre, Carandiru (there are books and movies about it). Today it is a beautiful park, with a skate park, courts. A bit dangerous, yes, I don't feel 100% safe there. Finally. But there are a lot of trees and I insist on going.
I really wanted to read a book by Elena Ferrante, but the first of the Neapolitan Tetralogy, her most famous, was rented. I picked up the "Long Petal of the Sea" by Chilean Isabel Allende, and read it very fast, becoming more and more addicted to the story of a Spanish family that flees the Franco dictatorship to start life over in Chile. I didn't know this piece of Spanish history, very sad by the way, nor of the Chilean dictatorship of Pinochet. Of the latter, in fact, he knew a little more, from the film adapted from Isabel's book "The House of the Spirits". Her writing always hooks me a lot, I get involved too much and gives a lot of dimension to history, politics and sociology. The main character of the book lives with the poet Pablo Neruda - who was responsible for bringing the Spanish exiles to Chile on the ship that gives the book its name - and Salvador Allende, one of the founders of the Chilean Communist Party and president assassinated during the Pinochet dictatorship.
It is worth mentioning that the library is beautiful, clean and has some huge paper airplanes hanging from the ceiling that I always admire. Soon I'll talk about more books from there!
Mirei no Kindle, acertei na biblioteca
Cheguei em um ponto em que sinto muita necessidade de dar uma limpada na minha casa. Já fui uma pessoa levemente acumuladora e hoje olho para ambientes mais minimalistas com um pouco de admiração. Como amo ler, comecei a cogitar comprar um Kindle e perguntei para alguns amigos se valia a pena, pois não queria ter novos objetos em casa. Pelas pesquisas é algo que realmente compensa, mesmo eu amando a experiência de ter um livro em mãos.
Dias depois me caiu uma ficha: moro do lado de uma Biblioteca pública incrível! Antes de comprar o Kindle fui visitar o local e sai com a cabeça feita: ao invés de gastar, vou começar a alugar livros ali.
Minhas idas à Biblioteca São Paulo, no Parque da Juventude, tem sido um dos momentos mais legais da minha semana. É um pretexto para sair de casa, andar apreciando as árvores, procurar os títulos disponíveis dos meus autores favoritos e me surpreender também, seja descobrindo livros que não conhecia ou entrando no espetáculo de circo que fica ao lado da biblioteca e eu sempre quis ver - mas sempre estava fechado. Um dia eu conto sobre este parque, que já foi uma prisão onde houve um massacre horroroso, o Carandiru (tem livro e filme sobre). Hoje é um parque bonito, com pista de skate, quadras. Um pouco perigoso, sim, não me sinto 100% segura lá. Enfim. Mas tem muita árvore e eu insisto em ir.
Queria muito ler algum livro da Elena Ferrante, mas o primeiro da Tetralogia Napolitana, a mais famosa dela, estava alugado. Peguei o "Longa Pétala de Mar" da chilena Isabel Allende, e li muito rápido, me viciando cada vez mais na história de uma família espanhola que foge da ditadura franquista para recomeçar a vida no Chile. Eu não conhecia esse pedaço da história espanhola, bem triste por sinal, tampouco da ditadura chilena de Pinochet. Desta última na verdade sabia um pouco mais, pelo filme adaptado do livro de Isabel "A Casa dos Espíritos". A escrita dela sempre me prende muito, me envolve demais e dá muita dimensão de história, política e sociologia. O personagem principal do livro convive com o poeta Pablo Neruda - que foi responsável por trazer os exilados espanhóis para o Chile no navio que dá o nome ao livro - e com o Salvador Allende, um dos fundadores do Partido Comunista chileno e presidente assassinado na ditadura Pinochet.
Vale dizer que a biblioteca é linda, limpa e tem uns aviões de papel enormes pendurados no teto que eu sempre fico admirando. Em breve vou falar de mais livros de lá!
