Black and White

pageBreak.png

What is black and white photography? It is more than just desaturating your image and removing all of the color from it. True black and white photography removes all of the distractions that can come with color and reveals the true essence and emotion of a photograph.

When I shoot, I try and envision what I want the final image to look like, and the type of feel that I want it to have. Doing so makes me conscious of my lens selection, aperture, shutter speed, angles, back drop, and then I have to think ahead to how the photo is going to be edited as well, so I can make sure that I am telling the story through the lens in the first place when I capture the photo so that it ends up the way I want it to when I am done with the final edits.

I am looking forward to seeing what kind of images you all come up with. If you make a post about your entry, make sure to leave the post link in the comment section along with your picture. Also, make sure to use the creativecoin tag with your post.

How is the Deranged Photography Contest set up?

pageBreak.png

The contest is broken up into three different tiers. Each will have a different payout for the winners based on what tier you enter into. Here is a breakdown of the rewards based on the tiers:

PlaceProfessionalAmateurBeginner
1st5 PAL4 PAL3 PAL
2nd3 PAL2.5 PAL2 PAL
3rd2 PAL1.5 PAL1 PAL

Each contest will be open for submissions for 6 days after the post is made and then closes at 0100 UTC (1800 MST) on the 6th day.

This will give me and any guest judges time to judge the submissions and create the post announcing the winners.

How to enter

pageBreak.png

When you enter a photo in the competition, you will state what tier you want to be judged in and locked in for the month at that level.

For example if you enter a photo, you drop the photo in the comment section, state what level of photographer you are, and then give a description of the photograph.

That's pretty much it, drop a photo in the comment section of this post and state your tier. If you want to make a separate post for your entry as well, that is fine, but for your entry to be valid, your photo and tier must be in here in the comment section of this post. If you do make a separate post, be sure to use the #palnet tag.

Additional Notes

pageBreak.png

  • Only one submission per contest. Extra submissions will be ignored.

  • You can switch your tier ONE time per month, but only if you are moving up into a higher tier, for example if you are currently in the amateur tier, but you think that you have a photograph that you want to enter in the professional tier, you can state that you are changing your tier to professional. You will then be locked into the new tier for the remainder of the month. You are not able to move down to a lower tier, like going from amateur to the beginner tier.

  • If you do not state wish tier you want to be judged in for the month, I will leave a comment to remind you to do so, but if you don't respond, you will be assigned to a tier and locked in for that month.

  • Plagiarism will not be tolerated in any form. All submissions must be your own work. I will investigate every entry and if you are caught plagiarizing, not only will you be blacklisted from competing from any future contests, but you will be reported to @steemcleaners as well. It is not worth it to try and cheat, especially with the 3 tier set up where everyone has an equal shot of winning.

Nice, thanks for pointing me to this contest via the #creativecoin discord!

I usually never process any of my photos as b/w... I have some weird issue with dialing in the "colors" there without feeling like the image has lost something. I know that's a stupid thing to say because I'm usually all for reduction in order to make more room for meaning and b/w is just great for that...

Well, anyways... there's this one image I took quite a while ago where I did give it a try, taking color out and focusing all on the texture of the subject.

Let me know how you like it:

I have posted it on steem last year already, so it's kinda dated, but I figured I might as well put it in here again?! Hope that's fine.

Concerning the tier... I'm definitely not a Pro, but I'm certainly not a beginner either... Amateur fits well I guess.

This photo was taken at the Cambridge University Botanic Garden recently. I always look out for this tree because of the unusual “repair” to save the tree. The black and white really brings out the character of the tree.
Please consider me in the beginner level 🙏🏽

what a curious subject... the brickwork all grown into the tree... awesome!

makes me wonder though... in b/w it is interesting because we have to look twice in order to fully grasp the contrast in texture where it would probably be glaringly obvious in full color!

Hi, @derangedvisions, here is my entry to your interesting photo contest, thank you!

It comes the Rain

That could be typical Baltic summer for a certain days period yearly. And so that was last two weeks a colder weather and frequent rainy periods.
Shot yesterday near the Ferry terminal in Klaipeda, Lithuania.
This place is very close to my house, so when I saw from the window rapidly approaching rainy front just grabbed my camera with tripod and run away.. quickly...
And even more quickly have to run BACK!!!! Not to get completely wet. Well, its few hundred meters away, so came back home almost dry... And all this running adventure was really worth the result

Enjoy it!

This Church stands in a Suburb of my hometown Stuttgart directly next to a small Lake. Every time I pass that church I´m impressed but it´s size.

Sure....why not. ;)

I met these lovely humans in Madanapalle – a city in Andhra Pradesh, India. I have many images from this encounter, but this one – there is such depth in this girl's eyes – so much story – the endearing support of her friend's sweet embrace – a heaviness too great for one so young.

I recognize myself in her.

I was going to catch the moment of the seagull while flying and accidentally, I also catched the posture of a stranger man standing in the sea side. He looked so lonely.

Good evening from me in England UK.
Here's my entry into this great contest by @derangedvisions

Meet 'Ozzy' our 11 year old Bearded Dragon. He's a real character and just loves to sit with us whenever he can.
This black and white shot was taken by me with my trusty Huawei P20 Pro Smartphone.
The use of the Monochrome setting at 40mp really brings out the details of his scales and eye.
I love photography and only ever use my phone.

DC📸🏃🎼 Thanks for inviting me in @derangedvisions
