Today I am sharing you one of a rice dish, very popular in Indonesia, called as Nasi Kuning. Nasi kuning means Yellow Rice, it is named that because the rice has a yellow color. The color itself is coming from Turmeric, so some people still call it as Turmeric Rice. I believe this dish is popular too in neighboring countries such as Malaysia and Philippine.
Nasi kuning is often perceived as a special rice for celebrations. Most people have this rice on their birthday, although some also have this during special occasion or rituals. However some people prefer to have this as a regular breakfast, and I am including in this group of people.
Basically Nasi kuning is made from rice with Turmeric and Coconut milk, however those two are not the only ingredients for the mix. We still have many more spices in the rice mix, and most region have a bit differences in the mix. Those extra Ingredients can be Cinnamon, Cloves, Lemongrass, Pandan leaves, Ginger, Shallots, and many more.
Due to those ingredients and it is made together with the rice, unlike Fried Rice which is considered as comfort food, Nasi Kuning is considered as a "HEALTHY" comfort food, which has many benefit for our health. People believe Nasi Kuning will boost up our immune system and eating it regularly on a long period could help people avoiding Cancer.
That's why I often seek this one for breakfast.
My Nasi Kuning
Now It's about how I got my Nasi Kuning on this day. I was in this place
Well it looked like a shopping mall, didn't it? Actually I was on a hospital. I was taking care my parent for days, I could say at that time I had not taken any sleep for more than 28 hours. Not sure how long it was, but I was very tired and I felt fatigue all over my body.
So I bought a box of Nasi Kuning and went to the table in their canteen. It was empty that time because it was very early in the morning. I had to pick Nasi Kuning because I thought I might fall off due to over fatigue that time. So before I got some sleep, I needed to make sure I took good food first.
This was the Nasi Kuning or Yellow Rice Package. It was simple in a plastic rice box package. I spent 30 thousands rupiah or around 1,8 USD for this one.
And this was what inside the box. In the middle you can see two cut of cucumber. on the right you see a chili paste, for spicing up the taste. Indonesian usually need some chili sauce or paste to spice up their food.
On the left, you can see a potato ball there, or a potato fritter. The above one, the cube shape cuts, are tempeh in soy sauce. Tempeh is a soy cake. And Below you can see some shredded omelet and a tiny shredded chicken.
In general, you could get this dish for below 2 USD was a good price, there were some better food sold there with two to three times of this price. I liked this yellow rice, and I think the taste was good too. So yeah, I would not complain about the price.
What could I expect anyway, it was an elite hospital. Everything should be pricey!!
WHY DID THIS MEAL BECOME THE MOST SORROWFUL ONE?
There are many sorrowful meals

But
this
yellow

He left us on the day of Chinese New Year. Rest in peace, Dad. Please send my hug and kiss to Grandma and Grandpa.
