A clear example of this can be seen in the city where I work, a capital with around 600,000 inhabitants. Although it is a small city compared to other urban centers in my country, it faces problems related to air pollution, especially due to the large flow of vehicles at peak times, as well as an environment with few trees and many buildings, which contributes to an increase in the local temperature. On the other hand, in the city where I live, with a population ten times smaller, the air quality is significantly better, and traffic and waste are more controlled, highlighting the advantages of a lower population density. However, we still face pollution problems, such as the improper dumping of industrial materials into the river that supplies the city, which results in contamination of the water and the environment.
Another major problem in many cities, including my own, is the improper disposal of waste, especially in open dumps, where the lack of selective collection and awareness of the correct disposal of waste aggravates soil and water pollution. Changing this scenario depends on effective public action, such as the implementation of selective collection systems and environmental education campaigns to raise awareness among the population about the importance of proper disposal. However, as exemplified by countries such as Japan, this is only possible when there is a culture of good habits ingrained in society from childhood.
In conclusion, environmental pollution is a complex problem that requires collaboration between public authorities and the population. Although population density plays a significant role in intensifying pollution, awareness-raising, education and the implementation of effective public policies, such as selective waste collection, are key to reducing environmental impacts. The example of other countries that have managed to mitigate these problems shows that, with a joint effort, it is possible to transform the reality of many cities, making them more sustainable and less polluted.
