Self-esteem as a delicate aspect in adolescence.
In the adolescent stage there are more or less prolonged periods of melancholy and self-absorption. The self-concept is being formed and it is normal that there is an identity crisis.
In effect, self-esteem is a particularly delicate aspect in adolescence. All the variations that take place end up transforming the individual in one way or another. In the end, the ideal would be that the result was the taste of the interested party. But, as has been said, it is often not.
So, what are the factors that make the adolescent more susceptible to suffering from low self-esteem?
According to studies conducted in large groups of adolescents, the following conditions are sources of feelings of insecurity:
1. Late development.
We must understand, dear reader, that it is very important for the self-esteem of the adolescent of both sexes to see that the signs of development, especially the physical one, appear more or less in time. Little can be done to control the pace of development, but we can clarify to the young man or the girl that the rhythm is not the same in all cases. We must also be alert, then, when the irregularity reaches the pathological limits, the doctor can prescribe the corresponding hormonal treatment.

2. The physical attractiveness.
It is interesting that adults understand that young people and adolescents place physical attractiveness in one of the highest positions of their scale of values. The adolescent who does not consider himself sufficiently attractive reflects in his behavior the resulting dissatisfaction. Unfortunately, this mismatch can lead to significant pathologies in behavior, such as cases of anorexia or bulimia.
Anorexia nervosa is a much more frequent disorder in women than in men and generally manifests towards the end of adolescence. It is characterized by an intense desire to lose weight. This translates into a diet and physical exercise until reaching a significantly lower weight than normal. In turn, it is accompanied by an irrational fear of obesity, a distortion of the perception of one's own body and amenorrhea in patients.
Bulimia nervosa is a mental disorder very similar to anorexia, but with the peculiarity that it is almost always accompanied by induced vomiting. It occurs more frequently than anorexia and most of those who suffer from it are women. It begins at the end of adolescence or in youth and is characterized by strong desires to eat very caloric foods (sweet, fat, fried) with a later remorse. This is followed by vomiting or, in its place, the improper use of laxatives, diuretics and other drugs.

3. Social class of the family.
Children who come from low-income or low-income families are more likely to have a bad self-concept. In fact, the rich can acquire the latest fashion or objects desired by young people (electrical appliances, motorcycles, etc.), which are not readily available to other social groups. In any case, it must be borne in mind that adolescents tend to be grouped by social classes, which cushions the negative effects on those with fewer economic resources.
4. Residence area.
The pattern of behavior of the adolescent (and to a large extent, also of the adult) is usually marked by the lifestyle that prevails in the environment where it operates. In large cities, families tend to group in areas of similar social class. In the case of strong contrasts, parents should guide their educational action by emphasizing non-materialistic values and the idea of cooperation in the face of rivalry.

5. Belonging to an ethnic or religious minority.
When the young person is of another ethnic group or nationality, or a minority religious denomination belongs, a tendency to be considered inferior to the majority may manifest itself in him. Perhaps the most effective strategy is to instill, since before adolescence, a sense of pride in possessing a peculiarity that others do not have. In this way, they will face the task of demonstrating that, despite their origin or beliefs, they can achieve the same or even greater achievements than the general population.
6. Parent's style.
Paternal styles that are predominantly indifferent or, on the contrary, excessively authoritarian, tend to produce adolescents with a low level of self-esteem. The ideal style to treat the adolescent is the democratic one, in which there is constant dialogue and strong emotional support accompanied by parental control.

Feeling understood is essential to enjoy healthy self-esteem. Among his peers (friends and colleagues) the teenager finds it easier, because with them he can develop a free and spontaneous relationship. Now, the teenager should never forget that his elders also try to understand him; Because they love him, and in addition they surely passed in his moment by similar situations.
