I feel safer with scatter and eostoolkit.io on EOS, than I did with a ledger on ETH. I used a clean offline computer to create new key pairs and saved them in scattering offline, I used eostoolkit.io to change my permissions, for both active and owner and I retained my genesis key pair and owner keys offline. I staked the bulk of my tokens and (prior to launch) used the eosportal.io with scatter to vote in the first 15% to activate the chain. Latter I set up eosauthorities alerts to notify me of any activities on my accounts and I really feel as safe as I have ever felt.
I knew nothing of any of these tools prior to launch and struggled to learn how to map my EOS keys to my ETH ledger address, so I am no crypto genius.
Voting via proxy is a 60 sec task once a week and no exchange is misrepresenting my views of who should be processing blocks.
I have taught dozens of people to take these steps one by one, even made a video to reach further.
At some point, people have to move beyond the ear to learning and then doing.
I have voted ever since and the toolkit and scatter have progressed forward the whole time. The support from @nsjames and @nsrempel is the best customer support I have experienced in decades. Toss in @soleone for good measure, because this guy will remain patient with anyone's inability to grasp how it works way past where I would break.

Does a crypto fund count as a proxy? Can they vote on behalf of the tokenholders this way? Do they allow their tokenholders to look at other proxies?

It's an encouraging trend to see crypto funds get involved in all honesty. With a bit more transparency they can pave the way for others.

The funds that include DPOS should be voting for the fund holders. That's obvious. Taking the "inactive approach" can be damaging for the dpos chain and the holders themselves.
They should create a proxy and vote whichever way benefits the fund, or choose a proxy that does.
Hopefully, they will set a better example in the future

Crypto funds are entities that hold tokens based on criteria for giving certain returns to investors. Investors are not owning those tokens. It is different from exchanges where token holders are shown their token balance and they make their own decisions. So, I would assume Crypto funds are more like whales. Most of the whale accounts you see are usually some funds or a company that is almost similar to Crypto funds.
A transparent Crypto fund is a good whale in my book. they are declaring their intent and working with the system. Their votes can be identified. While exchange when they vote with their wallets, they are hiding the information about who really owns the tokens and there is no transparency.
