Saying what the fuck

Some days you just have to say, what the fuck, and do something for yourself and today's that day.

- galenkp -

Do you ever get those days when it feels like going to work isn't the most appropriate way to spend your time? I do sometimes - today that feeling descended upon me and I decided to wear it like a warm fucken coat on a cold winters day...that is to say, I decided not to go to work and I felt all warm and fuzzy inside. It's not something I do a lot, I rarely have days off from work, but today...yep, not going...I'm going hunting instead.

Above is where I'm going, although that picture is taken at sunset rather than the super-early morning on which I arrived there to begin my day of hunting...but you get the point I presume. It's glorious.

lfp.JPG

I decided to go big and brought out some flesh (a couple steaks) that I'll sear on an open fire I build with my own two hands and some other tasty morsels that will make up my lunch, and I'll spend the day spotting, following game, stalking and shooting if targets present themselves. More importantly though, I'll spend the time not thinking about work, out with nature, and taking the time to show myself some self care.

I tend to push the limits of my physical, mental and emotional endurance at work and I pay a price for it; I've been feeling a little detached from my work lately too, (hmm, maybe a change is due), and days like today help me navigate that path, a path I'm not willing to allow to turn into a slippery slope of decline...I'm worth working on and so self care is important. I need days like today, those on which I say, what the fuck, I'm going to do something for me.

What about you?

I think it speaks of our vintage or generation that we treat this as the exception to the rule. “If it was easy and fun, nobody would pay you to do it. Nobody cares, work harder.” Definitely the basis upon which success is built, but to what extent?

Discomfort, patience and even discipline seem not to be so much the rage these days. Some people are raised with the notion that mental health and happiness are not just the most important thing (definitely up there) but the only thing. Can you imagine having “fuckit, imma take a me day” in the running as the proper course of action every day?

I think you must have earned that day. I bet the odd day like that centers you and recharges you for the grind it takes to be successful. Congrats on your day and I hope it was a glorious retreat!

A good work ethic seems to be a fast-declining personality trait. Not with me, and loads of others of my vintage, I guess, as you rightly point out. I wonder what will happen into the future when a good work ethic is a rarity. I know what will happen, chaos.

I had as nice day today, a needed day, and even started mulling over a camping trip for which I'm looking for the right days in what is a very full schedule. I want five days in a row which sounds easy to find but is not, for me anyway. I won't go far, a few hundred kilometres, maybe four hundred or so, far enough to be away from work and people and society and everything except nature. campfires, some books, hikes and...well you get the idea.

You work too hard and push yourself too far I think, you should try and take more care of yourself because people around you care for you and want you around for a long time. It was so nice to learn of this day you took, you needed it and deserved it and I'm sure you get the value you were looking for from it.

Becca 🌷

Kind words, caring also, thank you.

Awesome dude! I'm glad you've gotten some time to yourself. I think I've still got 2-3 weeks of chaos and then I think my stress will fall away almost overnight...

Both your photos are great... but that first photo is absolutely incredible. Well done!

The problem with taking time away from chaos is that one often needs to go back to it. I had a good day though, needed it, and am thinking of a camping adventure in the next couple months. That should help me stay sane.

I hope things improve for you, and everybody who grinds it out.

Thanks for the comment on the photo...it's a lovely place to be.

By the photo on your post, I am sure your "what the fuck" was a push of energy. Just looking at those colors in nature feels great, on top of that you are doing one of your favorite hobbies, I can imagine you had a perfect day!

I have not felt the need of a "what the fuck" for quite a while, but I did several times when I was a company employee. To me, it always ended the same way,,, quitting :)

Quitting...funny you should say that as I've been evaluating the scenario and still am. I'm not sure what will happen but know that there's only so far I'll bend before I'm all out of shape...best not to go there huh?

I heard this quote from Steve Jobs in his speech at the Standford Graduation Ceremony back in 2005. I have stuck to it since then, and have watched that YouTube video many more times as it is a source of inspiration.

Yep, asked myself that a few times as well. Sometimes things get in the way of the changes though, some within and some outside of our control. There's always a way forward though.

I threw in the towel, called a time out, black flagged, out of the race, parked it for a week. Kelly went on her annual ten day vay-k to visit her family.

Perfect excuse to step back from the highway for a break. Bill collectors may not like it. Fuk em...

I would rather have been with you than what I have been doing for the last three days. Adding on to the storage shed. Building, roofing, ladders, powertools.

My break will be a close second to what you did with your break. But you still win.

That's sometimes the problem with time off, one works just as hard at home! At least it's more enjoyable I guess though. It looks like you're getting some shit done.../but yeah, would have been better out hunting huh?

That photo of your weapon of choice looks really cool, just sayin!

Lol...yep, it's a cracker (the firearm) and a pleasure to operate with.

Bordering on burnout? Least you know how to deal with it before it becomes a problem :)

Bordering on...indeed. I'm not the guy who breaks but that's probably because I see the signs and work around them for better outcomes. I needed today though, and many more days like it!

Be your own boss. 😁

Lol...I am...need to fire myself though! 🙄

😂 "exactly"

Or maybe I'll just give myself a promotion and pay increase.

Nah, I'll fire myself, life will be easier. Lol

😅The boss must have some wisdom, so... you'll know what to do. You can work remotely.

Lol...yeah, remotely from the wilderness...where I have no phone or internet service I hope!

That is a beautiful photo you have at the top.

It is good to listen to yourself when yourself say you need a break. Glad you did and that you had a good day.

Thank you, the place is pretty cool in person too!

I had a nice day, glad I listened to what my body and mind was telling me...take a break nutbag. It was needed.

Sounds like a good day of self care - one that we all need every now and then! I think going for a nice hunt sounds like a wonderful way to spend a day away from work, especially impromptu ones.

I’ve got sick time that I do need to take more often - they classify these things into buckets. I can say fuck it, I’m done and just take a day as a sick day. Saving that one for a beautiful summer day let me tell you! Lol.

So onto the other reason I stopped by, besides to see how you’re doing and it sounds like a great day off - is Emma-H doing okay? I don’t know if you’ve talked to her but I do know that you two know each other at least tangentially in the physical world. Don’t know if you’ve heard from her. Haven’t seen her around in a long time!

Self care is better than self flagellation...not that I've ever done the latter. 😆

I had a good day, sat around my small fire for a bit, seared some flesh, laid back and relaxed (even fell asleep for a bit) and did some hunting too. It was all about me though, a break (gap) from work and a recharge as you say. Well worth the effort...not that it was an effort.

On the other matter, I'd not expect to see her back if I were you, just another person who came and went - her reasons are legitimate though.

Yeah that sounds like an awesome day for sure! I've strangely never cooked a steak over a fire, always on a grill. Hoping to rectify that with the little man sometime soon!

Ah that's unfortunate but at least I know she didn't fuck up and lose her password again lmao. Thanks for the info on Emma.

I plan to take time off, but it's pretty rare that I just do it on the spur of the moment. We had a holiday in the US today and I did spend a bit of time camping this past weekend.

I've got a camping trip simmering away in my mind...I'm looking for the right five days to deploy. Soon I hope.

I hope it works out well for you! We don't have any long trips planned this summer. I think most of them are three nights long.

Time to recharge...

We all need a day like this, a day of disconnection to recharge or simply rest from the routine, from everyone and to be able to connect with oneself, you are fortunate to be able to do it, mate. I'll soon follow your example, many days in the hospital cause me burnout and sometimes -I just want to tell it all to hell, that's why I applaud that you've decided that today.

Well, after all, how was the day? Were you able to shoot?

Btw The cover photo could well be a Windows desktop background 😅

Burnout is a real thing and often if one gets to that point one has pushed far too hard. It's best to recognise the signs and take steps to address the decline before it happens. I hope you get a chance to take your foot off the accelerator.

Yep, it's a great spot...easy to photograph so I give all the credit for the photo to nature.

Beautiful view and nice photo you took, you really love hunting. I have always wondered why men, they are so fascinated by firearms.

It's a nice place and easy to photo...because it's so nice. 🤔🤪

You did the right thing, first is health and not only physical but mental health! You have to take care of it, otherwise the stress will take its toll. Nature always helps.

What a beautiful landscape, it's a beautiful postcard!

And yes, the same thing happens to me, and for example I say I'm sorry but I need the beach right now! Breathe the sea air urgently!

You did the right thing

I like doing the right hing, it seems to be the right thing to do. 😁

Yes it is! The only thing is that you benefit from the decision!

Definitely feeling some burnout with work and family stress here, too. I took a break. It helped. But the pressure is still mounting again.

That's the thing of it, a break and all is ok and then one becomes a pressure cooker once again soon after. I had a good day though, much needed.

sounds good. Not going to work and having some steak.

I also want to say what the fuck but I think I should be focusing on working hard now so I can do that more in the future when my body isn't at its prime🤣

Yeah, work hard, been there done that. Still doing it.

is it ok to work hard now so later i can chill haha. I don't want to work hard in the future by future i mean like maybe 50-60+. let the money work for me? I'd want to focus more on charity stuff and cultivating the future

Cultivating the future, ensuring one has a good one, is an important part of the process for a young person...so many do not do it though.

ya I don't know how they do that . It seems very popular for the new generation; they kinda live in the moment. for me though, I'm constantly thinking about my future and thinking how I don't want to be one of those people still needing to work at 70+ at least and worry about not having enough money to get by or needing family to take care of me financially. Maybe people are losing their way of thinking now with all the devices and media poisoning their mind haha

beautiful photo.

what the fuck, and do something for yourself

I ordered new glasses last week. My current ones served me for about 11 years. Spending that much is no fun but my eyes will thank me.

Hopefully those new glasses help you see good times ahead of you and that you can plot a way towards them.

Hi Gale, it's been many hours since the post was published. Hope you had a great day of hunting and enjoying Nature.

Best regards

It was an awesome day, refreshing and rejuvenating. I'm pleasantly fatigued from my exertions and happy with how the day went.

I can do nothing but rejoice, very best regards

I love that place, it looks serene and magical, like a wonderful place to totally disconnect and be yourself once again, yes be yourself and not someone's... F**k 'em all...

Oh yeah, it's certainly a nice place to be, I'm lucky to live in such a cool country with places like this near by.

Oh I've had lots of instances of that happening, but who doesn't. It isn't uncommon for people to use their sick leave here for that. I think taking a break is really important, and sometimes the need for it is a spur of the moment.

Those are very beautiful photos by the way.

I'm lucky, I just took the day off, paid still, without having to use annual leave or sick pay; I guess due to the efforts I put in that the boss recognises. It wouldn't have mattered if I didn't get paid for it though, I still would have taken the day. Needed it.
