Memes
The social media space on the internet wouldn't be complete without them. If you use any social media platform, it is almost impossible not to encounter a meme. Whether it’s “Bad Luck Brian,” Success Kid,” Hey Girl” or “Condescending Wonka,” these pictures with clever sayings have taken the internet by storm. But, that was back in the old days though. Now, memes have evolved. Virtually almost every picture with a certain kind of facial expression or emotion can be turned into a meme. Most memes are created for comic reasons. However, there are other reasons why people create memes.
In this article, I will talk about a field in which memes are becoming a relevant tool. Furthermore, I will also introduce/review an app that people can make memes with.
Memetastic; Make memes in less than a minute; Ask questions later.
I love memes. I have tons of them stored on my mobile phone. My good friend Soye does me the favour of sending them whenever we are having a conversation online. I often wondered how people got so creative and turned everyday pictures to hilarious, sometimes meaningful contents(memes). I've always wanted to create a meme but, I didn't know how to go about it. I used to think that making a meme required a certain kind and level of skill. Apparently, my thoughts were very false. I found out a few days ago that creating a meme doesn't take more than 2 minutes maximum (That is if all the components required for the meme is available). It turned out that all I needed was an app. Memetastic is that app.
What is Memetastic?
According to the app's description, Memetastic is a;
Simple Meme Creator. Completely ad-free, and adds no watermarks. Memes can be created from image templates in MemeTastic pictures folder, from pictures shared into the app and pictures from gallery & camera. No internet connection required or used.
The app's description sums up everything about the app. I've been on the app for a couple of days now, and I'm enjoying it. I didn't really look out for other meme creators but, if there are others out there, I'm sure they won't be as cool as this one.
Memetastic's features.
The app was developed for users to be able to create memes. So, every component of the app is geared towards that purpose. The implication of this is that; my review of the app's features would almost be like an explanation of how the app works.
Creating a meme.
As I have earlier said, it takes very little time to create a meme(that's if you are using Memetastic). Memetastic comes with a preloaded template of images you can convert into a meme. To be honest, I wasn't expecting any preloaded template. I expected that I would have to import an image myself, then the app will enable me to do other things like; inputting texts and aligning them properly. After I launched the app, my expectations were exceeded. The app had a large chunk of templates I could choose from. I was really excited. I immediately tried the app and I created a meme. I would love to share it here but, it's NSFW. But, I created another one that I can share. You'll get to see it only if you read this article to the end (Read the article. Don't scroll down immediately).
Import images or capture them.
This feature was what I expected to see on the app. The preloaded templates were unexpected. Well, I was only expecting to be able to import images. The additional feature of being able to capture images is cool but, I doubt if I'll ever use it. Capturing images on the go to create memes would be a little bit awkward or impossible.
Customization.
The fact that I could do customize some components of the meme I wanted to create was cool. I expected that I was going to be able to do some customizations though. And, I was glad that the project owner included a reasonable amount of customizable parameters.
Here are the customizable parameters in this picture below;
I could decide to set all the text to be in capital letters or not. By default, that feature is enabled, and, I didn't bother to change it. Most memes I've seen, the captions are always in capital letters, and they look appealing. I tried using small letters though; but, the meme looked a bit weird. The availability of other fonts was cool. The fonts that were available weren't so much but, they are fonts relevant for creating memes. Pro tip; The default font is the best font to use. You can also adjust background colour, border colour and font size. The customization parameters are just perfect.
Aside from creating memes, the app comes with some other features like;
Favourites
Without using the app, you will wonder why there is a "favourites" feature. You won't also get to know the importance of this feature until you actually use the app. Recall that I said the app comes preloaded with templates. You can find cool templates to use as soon as you launch the app. But, as soon as you minimize the app and access it back, the templates on that page would be shuffled. Meaning the template you saw on that page would have changed position. To find it, you have to browse through the templates thoroughly. To be honest, that's a lot of work. So, to save me the stress, what do I do? Any template I see and like, I immediately add them to my favourites. There's a dedicated favourites page, so I can easily access the templates there.
Well, I found out later on that I could turn on/off the automatic shuffling but, I still use the favourites feature.
"Saved" page.
This is the page where all memes you have created go to. You won't find saved memes on your gallery. The only way to make it available on your gallery is by sharing it and saving it on a folder on your device. I don't know if I'm correct though. But, after I saved some memes, I looked for them on my gallery and didn't find them. It was a little bit annoying, but, I got over the issue in a few minutes. I cared less if I could only access the memes I created on the app.
So, that is all about the Memetastic app. You can see that there aren't many features on the app. The app was designed to be simple and straight forward. Get in there, create memes, share memes, and get out.
I said I was going to talk about a field where memes are gradually becoming relevant tools. That is; ' Online Marketing', which is also called advertisement; on the internet. Like I said earlier, you'd hardly been on the internet, especially on the social media axis of the internet without coming across a meme. I also said most memes are created just for comic relief. But, with the right content, right audience, right projection, a common meme can attract or influence the audience to the product you are selling.
I would have loved to talk extensively about this but, my knowledge of this is very limited. But, what I would do is; I would drop links in the "links" section on how memes are used to market products and services. If you thought memes were only good for making jokes, you are not wrong, but you can also lace the jokes with a message to prospective clients.
Summary.
Memes have really affected the internet space, and, for good. I can't count how many times I've laughed uncontrollably after seeing a meme. Health experts say laughing is good for our health. So, I think memes are one of the reasons I'm healthy(kidding). In this article, I've shared talked about Memetastic; An app you can use to create memes in a few minutes. The app is very easy to use, its features are not much, but relevant. So whatever purpose you wish to create memes for, Memetastic should be your go-to app.
