According to BlockchainSpace CEO, the "Philippines is one of the leaders of Web 3 adoption in Southeast Asia with millions already owning crypto wallets and participating in GameFi."¹ That is probably why sometime earlier this year (May), BlockchainSpace, announced its partnership with Smart country), "to explore Web3-powered solutions that connect communities, unlock new opportunities, and drive growth for all stakeholders."²
The said collaboration aims to navigate further on the potential of Web 3 to foster growth and reflect their shared mission and vision "for building pioneering innovative solutions to create an accessible and connected digital landscape for all. Through it, both companies will continue to build and enable more communities to connect in a truly open, meaningful, and secure manner."³
Smart is FIBA's global partner for this year and with over 60 million subscribers, it has a good advantage in exposing its users to Web 3 and sports not only in the country but also in other regions in Southeast Asia.
The partnership launched YEY. Let's take a closer look at what it is.
YEY App
Yey is a community-collectible platform built on the polygon chain and is currently in its Pre-Alpha phase. The application's aim is to empower creators, games, brands, and influencers to reward their fans in new and exciting ways with exclusive digital collectibles and other incentives for their participation and engagement.⁴
YEY has different uses as follows:
- For community (guild) owners, the platform provides a Web3-powered toolkit for community member engagement. This includes the ability to create custom rewards programs, track community engagement, and gamify the rewards experience.
- For community (guild) members, YEY represents a passport of experiences through digital exclusives (“Shinys”). Shinys are earned by completing tasks set by the community owners, such as attending events, liking posts, or sharing content.
- For brands, the platform provides access to a curated list of top communities and their members. Brands can use YEY to create targeted marketing campaigns and reward their customers for their loyalty.

How does it work
The app allows fans and community owners (creators, games, brands, influencers) to connect with each other. Fans or community members can earn and collect exclusive Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) called "Shinys" through their various activities and interactions within the app.⁵
The Shinys can be used to redeem rewards which include access to exclusive content, early product releases, or real-world experiences.⁶
The app was launched during the FIBA World Cup and between August 25th to September 1st, attendees of the FIBA event who are Smart subscribers (postpaid or prepaid) were given the chance to claim exclusive Shinys by visiting Smart FIBA booths in the game venues and earned entries into a raffle with a grand prize of a pass to all the Finals Stage Games of FIBA during the year.⁷
Another campaign occurred during the Philippine Blockchain Week where subscribers had the opportunity to collect more Shinys for swags and other rewards. Accordingly, the more one collects, the more chances one gets for surprise prizes next year.
How to create a YEY account
✅ Go to the YEY platform and sign up with your preferred method (phone number, email or Google).
✅ A confirmation will be sent to your chosen sign-up method which you will need to enter into the given field.
✅ Proceed with the process by entering your username and you're done!
You can then explore and request to join communities (I presume approval is done manually). Most of the available communities to date are exclusive to those who have collected certain Shinys.
Based on the yey intro site, brands or creators need to apply and join the waiting list for them to be able to create a community in the platform. That is probably one of the reasons why there are a few communities created.
Summary & Conclusion
Smart Communications and BlockchainSpace are collaborating in an attempt to connect communities and people through the YEY app which allows brands or creators to incentivize their community members or fans with Shinys (NFTs that can be used to claim rewards).
Besides the mention of users being able to create their own account and connect it to a custodial wallet, there is no information about what wallet is used.
The downside is that one needs to be physically present at events to be able to take advantage of the app when there are actual events and/or campaigns. Hopefully, they will introduce more ways and opportunities where users can use it virtually.
The app (platform, no mobile app yet) is free to use and fairly new. It's currently in its pre-alpha stage and there might be more features to be added to it so it will be interesting to see how it develops and how its userbase grows over time.

This is a nice concept and I never came across anything like this. I think this can help brands to get more attention which may turn our to higher revenue generation.
It is and I'm hoping more brands and communities will be added to it so users will have more to participate in. Brand awareness and revenue generation might be some of the driving forces behind the platform.
