Is this universe an Illusion? The Simulation Theory

This is a fascinating theory that I think is completely plausible, the theory in a nutshell is that this Universe is an illusion and is generated by a computer simulation. It could be interpreted that all of us are not actually here and we are controlling this simulation of ourselves in a completely different place/time/state. Or I could be in this simulation by myself and the rest of you are AI controlled. Either way it's the same simple principle that this is actually an Illusion.

Why I think this is plausible

I think the main evidence is that the technology is possible, maybe not at the moment but the basics are certainly there. You have the sensory elements binding with technology through prosthetics becoming more and more prominent, you also have technology like VR and AR (Augmented reality) starting to break through. Plus as we cant remember going into this reality then all memory we would have would need to be wiped, which is possible through electrical currents being put through the brain. Obviously we cannot comprehend the sophistication of what these technologies would have to be like to create the completely immersive reality we live in...but we know it's theoretically possible.

Why would we not be able to know its not real?

There are so many reasons and explanations for why we wouldnt know if this was a simulation but I think the main one is that if we knew it wasn't real then we wouldn't enjoy it as much, because the bad wouldn't feel bad as they would have no consequences and the good wouldn't feel good because we don't suffer through the bad. Also if once the simulation ends through death then everyone would just commit suicide once it got boring ect.

What would the point of creating a Virtual Reality be?

It could be a test, a training exercise to pick the very best individuals for some sort of purpose, or our bodies have become so infirm that all we could do was plug ourselves into a virtual reality and experience countless lives in a very short space of time, because our lives could last 15 minutes or seconds in comparison to out of the simulation. There are endless reasons why we would want to experience a simulated life or why we could be being forced into one.

Possible hints that we live in a simulation

Even though I do not believe in God, it is incredibly hard to believe and strange how our existence was created by incredibly specific conditions and that our universe was created through a massive explosion which at the moment scientists have no real idea of what caused it. The immense amount of unknown questions just prompts me to think of other explanations and that is why most people believe in religion. You also have mind tricks such as Déjà vu and dreams which in themselves are weird. You also have people that have died and been brought back who experience a bright light, and or a peaceful feeling when it's happening.

Answering the questions with "The Simulation Theory" - Examples

  1. You are old and can't experience life to its max in the real universe, you choose to experience a virtual world
  2. They use a memory wiper and equip the virtual machine which takes over your mind
  3. Crying when we are born is caused by the pain of the transition/memory wipe
  4. This memory wipe takes some time to fully complete and that's why we cannot talk or function for a while due to the risk of us still being able to remember our actual lives.
  5. Déjà vu is that the situation currently being experienced has already been experienced in your real lives
  6. The bright light is you opening your eyes in a lit room and your eyes take time to readjust after being in darkness for so long
  7. The feeling of peace at death is just a high caused by drugs that the simulation applies in order to wake you up without you completely freaking out.

Hopefully you enjoyed this post, feel free to ask me more questions and test my imagination. Just to confirm I do not believe in this, I just think its completely plausible.

The last series of Doctor Who wasn't great but this one episode made up for it, using a similar premise

That is also called the hologram theory that says every possible object in the universe has a unique code in which all information of it's is stored and what we see is the hologram projection of that information. So our whole universe can be a illusion. Some proof of the theory was found in the year 2015 but the theory is yet to be proved fully.
