Imagine- if you were paid to play?
How would you order your life differently or prioritize finding play, fun, spontaneity in your life?
As a performer people love to tell me how fun my job is. And how I'm paid to play. I would agree with that. I am fortunate to make a living doing something I love.It has and continues to be joyful, gruelling, passionate, hilarious, frustrating and oh so fulfilling.
But like any career there are certain things we are paid to prioritize and things we are not. Cue the juggling act (circus pun intended)
You are getting paid to do one thing- you want/need that money to be able to fuel other passions but the lack of time doesn't necessarily allow for the fun stuff. Or at least that goes to the bottom of the list. Oh and friendships, relationships, down time and...sleep? The guilt trips you take yourself on or other people see you having fun and so they shame you...Yup, fun is often the first thing to go. Sound familiar?
We value productivity over play and see them as separate when they truly co exist and compliment one another. You will be better at the work you do if you also prioritize time for your mind and body to enjoy itself. If you're reading this and you still think- uhhh I don't have time for 'that' stuff...
Think of it this way- I'm not naturally a whizz with numbers, legal/government type documents make me sweat and doing my taxes stressed me out. BUT I have to do them to be a contributing member of society and so the government doesn't chase me down. I'm not paid to do taxes, I'm not naturally inclined to do them and I'm so busy they are a hassle but doing them and getting them done helps the rest of my life.
Now, was that mess FUN for me? Hmmm maybe not BUT it's an example of prioritizing something that I'm not getting paid to do and making it part of my life. Collecting receipts, writing what I need on the back, budgeting etc. It has even become a nice way to look back on the year and my accomplishments and also where I can improve. It has become a practice. And each year that practice becomes less like a task and just a part of the world I live in.
If play isn't something you've built into your life you can't just expect to have it. Build it in in small ways so that having fun isn't a "twice a year only on on vacation" type thing. I think we can do better.
Imagine- if you were paid to play what would that look like for you? How would your priorities change or what would your life look like?
Would you watch more movies? Take a cooking class? Go for drinks with old friends? Read more? Make time to just call a friend and laugh? Boardgames? Beach days? It doesn't have to be complicated, it needs to be what you truly believe is playful and fun.
You'll see parts of your life start to sparkle, feel those deep belly laughs and feel more open. Don't be afraid if it feels difficult at first. Like anything, it can take time to discover what PLAY really means for you in your life. My first pull ups weren't easy but I did them, memorizing monologues would take hours but now only minutes. You give your time to your work and energy to so many things in a day- why not make PLAY one of them?
