In this video, my brother Mark aka MFA, goes over further into sports betting and looks at the concept of point spreads, and how to read them. A point spread is the amount of points a team is favored to win by, indicated by a minus (-) sign. For example, if the Cleveland Cavaliers are favored to win against the Golden State Warriors by 3 points, then their point spread would be -3.
On the other hand, the Golden State Warriors would be likely to lose by 3 points, which would be indicated by a plus (+) sign, and their spread would be +3.
If you were to bet on a team to "cover" the spread, that means that your team beats the given spread. For example, betting on the Cavaliers to cover the spread would require that they win by MORE than 3 points. Betting on the Warriors would require they win or lose by LESS than 3 points. However, if the Cavaliers win by 3 points, then their is a tie and no one wins, or loses.
A spread indicated by a Pick, PK, Even, Pick'em, or Pick em means that you are betting strictly on whether a team wins, regardless of the amount of points.
Some spreads avoid ties by adding a 0.5 or 1/2 to the spread, such as -3.5 or +3.5. The only difference is that a tie means that the favored team wins by 3.5, which is not possible in most sports because the scoring systems are almost always written in whole numbers.

Sports Betting: How to Read Point Spreads
The point spread in sports betting is the amount of points that the superior team is expected to win by.
Denver will only 'cover the spread' (win the bet) if they win by MORE than 3 points.
San Diego will 'cover the spread' if they lose the game by LESS than 3 points or win the game of course
** If Denver wins by exactly 3 points, the outcome is a tie. Neither team wins the bet.
*** If the spread says PICK, PK, EVEN, Pick'em, or Pick em on the spread, it mean that neither team is favored. Whoever wins the game, by any amount, covers the spread.
This means there cannot be a tie. One team MUST lose the bet and the other will win.
Example:
You place a bet on the Denver Broncos to 'cover the spread' and they end up winning 27-25. What is the outcome of your bet?
Example:
You place a bet on the Memphis Grizzlies to cover the spread and they lose 99-101. What is the outcome of your bet?
