Rom 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Rom 8:27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
If we look closely at what these verses are saying. We are the ones that are praying, but our prayer is helped or inspired by the Holy Spirit. Intercessiry Prayer is prayer for others. It could be for our family and it could be prayer for people we don’t even know. It is when we pray this sort of prayer that we are following the example of Jesus.
Jesus Interecedes for us every day as our High Priest
Heb 7:25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.
Intercession is when God’s people pray for others

Intercession or Intercessiry prayer can also be called “Standing In The Gap”
Intercession or standing in the Gap is twofold.
- In one form of this prayer we stand between God and a person or persons pleading for mercy.
- The second we stand in prayer between the devil and the person hell is attacking.
Here is classic Intercession by our Greatest Example Jesus Christ
Luk 23:33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.
Luk 23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.
At the same moment they were crucifying Jesus, He was praying (Interceding) for the people driving the nails into His Hands and Feet.
This is Jesus standing in the gap between people deserving God’s Judgement and God Himself, and the plea is for mercy.
Intercession is motivated by love. Because why would anyone pray for another person if it wasn’t for love.
If you are truly God’s Child, born again and following Jesus, God will have mercy on others because of your prayer.
Many of us pray for our family, friends or neighbors, but who prays for people we don’t even know, or like Jesus, prayer for people doing us wrong?
Moses
Moses is one of the greatest examples of an intercessor in the Bible.
Imagine asking God to blot your own name out of the Book of Life, instead of the people that sinned against God.
Exo 32:31 And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold.
Exo 32:32 Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written.
Intercession, You and I standing in the gap, pleading for God’s Mercies.
Abraham the Intercessor, trying to keep God from destroying Sodom.
Daniel Interceding for Israel
Joshua intercede for the Israelites
Job
Job 22:29 When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person.
Job 22:30 He shall deliver the island of the innocent: and it is delivered by the pureness of thine hands.
Job’s healing for himself came as he interceded for others.
As God’s Children, God will show mercy as we pray for others.
Intercession, Love In Action
Joh 15:12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
Joh 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
Requote paraphrased by Daddy William DWPV
Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life in Intercession for others.
We can pray effective, life changing prayer for others. What a high calling and privilege!
Every day for 8 or more years now, I get up in the morning at 3 or earlier to pray. It is truly the best part of the day. Time to fellowship with Abba. Time just to enjoy His Presence and the Joy that is in our Fatjer/son relationship. Part of this time together is making sure there is nothing straining my relationship with Him. Unconfessed sin, making sure I have forgiven others, making sure my first love is Him only. Then time to be led by the Holy Spirit (our text in Romans 8:26) and intercede for people I know and for many I don’t know. For me this is a joy as it pleases the Father. It is also humbling as I know my mother interceded for me, and as a result of her prayer, mercy was shown to me. I am thankful for what I have in Christ and I want the whole world to enjoy what I have too.
This is the first part of this kind of prayer. Next we will look at the other part of this prayer where we rebuke the enemy and stand in the gap when others are attacked by the gates of hell
