On Steemit, value can be in form of contribution and sharing of resources of original information, ideas, commitment, profession, experience/expertise, passion, creativity and participation in the growth and development of the community. It's like moving into a new Town, the townspeople recognise the inhabitants that contribute value to the development of that community more than others who dont, so yes one can be in the community and just be there like some of the new users are and one can choose to add value which brings reward.
When users make posts that are valuable on the platform, most of the time, it is up to the people to decide whether or not the post is valuable to them and deserve their reward. A user can share the image of his/her lunch, and for some reason that picture makes me happy, then it is of value to me, I will reward you in steem for investing your time in sharing a moment in your life that has made me happy or brightened my day.
Definitely the amount of success of your post is totally determined by not just the value it contains but also the type of audience the post is reaching based on the users who follow your blog. I mean you can't sell meat in a vegetarian street, no one will buy, you may even end up getting arrested. So if you want to be rewarded for taking your time in doing a thorough research about beautiful yellow butterflies that cure malaria in Africa, make sure you're followed by people who are either health practionals or at least are butterfly lovers. In a community of over 1,000,000 bots and real humans, I'm sure there is an audience for every one.
New users who are also finding it difficult to grow an audience within their niche can also do cross niche diversification, which is tailoring of content to suiting more than one niche. For example, your passion is cooking noodles and you want to share it with the world for the rest of your life, but there's no audience of noodle lovers yet, the best thing to do is tailor your content to accommodate rice lovers, spaghetti lovers, and maybe some pasta till you get the desired results of engagement.
When I got into steemit, I was quite ready to invest myself into the system, I made sure produced content every week, I've always done poetry, art, general discussions and fictional stories, but it was still difficult for me to get the results I desired, I tried cross niche diversification but I apparently was not good at writing any other thing, and forced value is no value, so I didn't have a choice but to wait patiently and be consistent.
My first set of challenges came when I couldn't reach out to more people on the platform because I had low bandwidth which was as a result of the low steempower I had. Of course I had to understand what bandwidth was and it's connection with steempower. There were times when I'm about to make a comment that will probably change my life and my bandwidth will tell me no way, it just ran out, then I will have to wait again till it recovers and by then my new found friend my have left.
I realised in time the need to power up which involved buying of Steem, and there my investment in Steem began In two ways. Contribution of value by investment of intellectual property right and value by buying into the systems currency Steem.
Gradually I over came my challenge of low bandwidth and could reach out more to people on the platform whom I resonated with. I also began to understand things better around the platform and my audience began to grow and develop. I'm still at the bottom chain but I know I'm on my way up. I will continue to be of and offer value in everyway I can, I will continue to invest in the system proactively and mindfully, contributing my best to the growth and development of the platform and to ensure Steem is globally adopted all over the world.
Once we come to the realization of the importance of understanding the requirements of our investments into the platform, then we can consciously direct the input of our effort at more valuable and productive endeavors, for our audience, our community, ourselves and our system.
A lot of users claim steemit is too difficult to find their way, it is no doubt, but it's adaptable and it gets better with the right approach and mindset.
Value-it
Invest-it
Reward-it
I remain yours, but mine first :D. I hope you learnt a thing or two.
I think the biggest investment new users have to adhere to is time. Time to learn and understand what this place is all about. Time to follow people who have similar interests to you. Time to comment as much as possible. It's all about time even if you have invested and powered up.
Thank you for your very honest and valuable reply, this is steem culture, im glad to have you around! See you on the top my friend
We will get there one of these days.
