Time flies, Opportunities Come Rarely

Seems like yesterday I was there. At the time, gainfully employed in my 9-5 was lucky enough to have been gifted (from a friend who in turn had been provided them as a corporate bonus), tickets to the zone 1 areas, which meant quite a lot of access to areas of the track mere mortal tickets don't provide. To maximize this opportunity I rented (this was possible in Singapore, perhaps still is) a fully equipped Canon EOS 5D, lenses, and a monopod. Over the course of a 4 day weekend, over 1700 photos were taken and later edited down to 600 or so which I still possess.

This is a selection of shots, just a few, as there would be too many for one post. However as there are so many really good and historic shots of both racing cars and drivers, it'd be good to mint some as NFTs one day, maybe soon! For today, I thought high time some of them can at least be added to the @newtonclassics blog.

Flashback - over a Decade of Singapore F1

Appropriately, the 2022 Singapore GP was just last weekend, so what better time to publish some of these than now. F1 cars have changed a lot in the intervening years. These were screaming 3.0 litre V8s from memory, recently downsized from the V12 and V10 engines and standardized as a rule. KERS was in it's infancy, with no zones as yet. Perhaps a few less buttons on the steering wheel too. Can still recall the sound of them, like nothing else on earth.

Buckle Up,

Fasten your racing harnesses, grab the wheel, and start scrolling the feed hahah ... or just a coffee and enjoy the pictures. More in the comments ...

Some shots worked really well in Black and white, this has been edited in post. There are many more like it. You can notice the faint lines appearing in the picture, this is the blurred out fencing which of course I couldn't get past.

Porsche GT cup racing is a popular series with major corporate sponsorship (as well as a few gentlemen racers). Wonderful sight to see all these hot Porsches going around the Singapore street circuit. Of course, it's just a little teaser to the main event however ... they are very fast, but still look slow compared to F1. Watching these actually helps you process, compare, just how much faster the F1 cars are, making them even more of a spectacle to behold.

Because P car ... favorite sports car of all time at NewtonClassics.

It's a helicopter, obviously. One with TV cameras flying around the circuit.

Laser projections up the side of the Marina Bay Sands casino / hotel. SingVegas.

Grid girls. It was in between races, on a circuit walkabout, I suddenly happened across these stunning Singapore born and bred women all in their SingTel grid outfits coming towards me. I barely had time to think, swinging the camera into action to grab this shot, and they were gone. It was only in post later did I notice the eye contact the girl on the left had engaged with the camera.

Tragically F1 grid ladies are now a thing of the past. Thanks WOKE brigade for making my photograph even more special and rare now hahaha.

It's Jenson Button. My all time favorite sports personality and top driver, personal legend and hero. I'll leave it there, he deserves an entire post about how awesome a bloke he is.

singapore-f1-2011-part1-006.jpg

It's Sebastian Vettel. My least favorite of all time hahahahaha .... ok Seb, you can drive pretty good I'll give it that. Just the finger thing? Oh boy. Have you seen his beard? Oh boy.

Singaporean ladies tend to be quite pleasing on the eye. Don't blame me!

Schumi, the one and only, driving for Petronos Mercedes still at this time. What a legend, incredible to see in the flesh, even at a distance (this is zoomed).

None other than Nico Rosberg, readying to go out on qualifying. I had to zoom all the way from the other side of the track into the pit garages - I didn't have the ultimate VIP access but close enough to catch scenes like this.

This is the time Lotus made a comeback with the Black and Gold color scheme of the old 'JPS' days. Very iconic indeed.

The Singapore flyer - pretty much brand new at this time!

Early bird fans are securing their positions in the free-seating podiums.

Around the track, there were some amazing entertainments rolling around. More of these in the next post, there will be quite a few more parts to this all with a very different selection of incredible scenes from the Singapore F1 race 11 years back!

More To Come!

Thanks for reading all the way down here, I am honored. This was just a mere sample, teaser, of hundreds more shots from this set I want to share on HIVE.blog. More would even possibly be minted, if the legality is clear (I took the images, but there maybe some rights/branding issues that Formula 1 has in place - anyone know their cookies about this one?). Can I mint an NFT of a Lewis Hamilton photograph I took, and he was in public? Or does he or Formula 1 own some rights over commercial use? Answers in the comments!
