The situation in the Middle East at the beginning of the second quarter of 2024 is extremely tense. The names of the countries of Israel and Palestine appear in every single edition of television news. In the last week, the name of the third country, Iran, appears more and more often among these two names. Everyone is wondering if and when the Israel-Iran conflict will break out. I look at these considerations from a slightly different point of view, because I remember my visit to Iran, which took place over 10 years ago and was very deeply remembered, so obviously I am not very objective in this conflict. Another thing is that in recent years I have been thinking more and more boldly about trying to go there on holiday again, but the heated situation in this area definitely discourages me from undertaking such a trip. That's why I thought to share my impressions from my stay in Iran in 2013.

Sytuacja na bliskim wschodzie na początku II kwartały roku 2024 jest wyjątkowo napięta. Nazwy państw Izrael i Palestyna przewijają się w każdym jednym wydaniu wiadomości telewizyjnych. W ostatnim tygodniu coraz częściej wśród tych dwóch nazw pojawia się nazwa trzeciego kraju czyli Iranu. Wszyscy zastanawiają się czy i kiedy, wybuchnie konflikt Izraelsko Irański. JA na te rozważania patrzę z trochę innego punktu, ponieważ wspominam moja wizytę w Iranie, która miała miejsce już ponad 10 lat temu i bardzo głęboko zapadła mi w pamięci, więc rzecz oczywista w tym konflikcie nie jestem zbyt obiektywny. Kolejna rzeczą jest to, że w ostatnich latach coraz śmielej zaczynałem myśleć o tym aby ponownie spróbować pojechać tam na wakacje, ale zaogniona sytuacja w tym rejonie zdecydowanie zniechęca do podjęcia się takiej wyprawy. Stąd przyszła mi myśl, aby podzielić się tutaj moimi wrażeniami z pobytu w Iranie w roku 2013.

How did we get to Iran? Back then, in 2013, definitely not the simplest, not the fastest, but certainly the cheapest option was a flight with the low-cost airline Wizzair from Katowice to Kutaisi and a subsequent hitchhiking trip through Georgia and Armenia, up to the Araks River valley, where in the city of Agarak we crossed the Iranian-Armenian border. Hitchhiking went quite smoothly, because along the way we visited various interesting places such as Kutaisi, Tbilisi, and Lake Sevan, and even though we were traveling with 4 people, we never had to wait too long for hitchhiking. Only in the Armenian town of Getik, at the crossroads, where the main road leading to the south of the country turned out to be the least traveled direction and literally no car passed for an hour, did we decide that we were stuck. Unfortunately, we had no choice but to wait because we had no alternative. After a long time, luck smiled on us and finally a car stopped, and not just any car, because it was a truck driven by an Iranian returning to his homeland. Luck was on our side, because with him we traveled 240 km on the exceptionally winding roads of southern Armenia. Even though today, when I look at Google, it says that this section can be covered in 4 and a half hours, I remember that back then it took us at least 10 hours of slow truck driving on serpentines.

Jak dostaliśmy się do Iranu? Wówczas w roku 2013 zdecydowanie nie najprostszą, nie najszybszą, ale na pewno najtańszą opcją był lot tanimi liniami lotniczymi Wizzair z Katowic do Kutaisi i późniejsza wyprawa autostopem przez Gruzje i Armenię, aż do doliny rzeki Araks gdzie w mieście Agarak przekroczyliśmy granice Irańsko Armeńską. Autostop mijał nam całkiem sprawnie, bo po drodze zwiedzaliśmy rożne ciekawe miejsca takie jak Kutaisi, Tibilisi, czy Jezioro Sevan, a na autostop mimo że podróżowaliśmy w 4 osoby nigdy nie musieliśmy za długo czekać. Dopiero w Armeńskiej miejscowości Getik na rozstaju dróg, gdzie droga główna prowadząca na południe kraju okazała się tym najmniej uczęszczanym kierunkiem i dosłownie przez godzinę czasu nie przejechał żaden samochód uznaliśmy, że utknęliśmy. Niestety nie było wyjścia trzeba było czekać bo nie mieliśmy żadnej alternatywy. Po dłuższym czasie szczęście uśmiechnęło się do nas i wreszcie zatrzymał się jakiś samochód i to nie byle jaki, bo był to TIR prowadzony przez Irańczyka wracającego do swojej ojczyzny. Szczęście sprzyjało, bo wraz z nim przejechaliśmy 240 km po wyjątkowo krętych drogach południowej Armenii. Mimo że tak jak dzisiaj patrzę google podpowiada, że ten odcinek można przejechać w 4 i pół godziny, to pamiętam, że wtedy trwało to nam co najmniej 10 godzin powolnej jazdy TIRem po serpentynach.

After reaching Iran, our driver announced that he was not going to Tabriz, but was planning to turn somewhere nearby, so he would immediately look for a taxi to take us to Tabriz. Since we still had about 100 kilometers to Tabriz, we were terrified of how much this taxi might cost us. And here is the first nice surprise. It turned out that in Iran TAXI is almost free, at least it was like that in 2013. We paid about 10 dollars for 100 kilometers, which took us about an hour and a half. Fairy tale!

Po dotarciu do Iranu nasz kierowca oznajmił, że on nie jedzie do Tabriz, tylko planuje skręcić gdzieś tutaj zaraz obok, więc zaraz poszuka nam taksówki która zawiezie nas do Tabriz. Ponieważ do Tabriz mieliśmy jeszcze jakieś 100 kilometrów, byliśmy przerażeni tym ile może nas kosztować ta taksówka. I tutaj pierwsza miła niespodzianka. Okazało się, że w Iranie TAXI jest niemal darmowe, tak przynajmniej było w roku 2013. Za 100 kilometrów, przejechanie których zajęło nam około półtorej godziny zapłaciliśmy około 10 dolarów. Bajka!
