There is no debate as to what is Iran's most iconic symbol. Hands down, it's Persepolis. Currently, only ruins remain of the richest city under the sun, but how impressive! To reach this sea of ruins it is best to take a taxi, as Persepolis is located only 70 km northeast of Shiraz. Its history dates back to 518 BC, when the ruler of Persia, Darius I, began building it as the new ceremonial capital of Persia. The true splendor of the city was given not by Darius, but by his son Xerxes. It must be admitted that he was a disgustingly rich ruler, whom we can recognize, for example, from the movie about 300 Spartans, in which Xerxes was the ruler invading ancient Greece. At its peak, the Persian Empire included part of Macedonia, all of Turkey, the Middle East, part of Egypt, in the north they reached the Caucasus Mountains, and in the east they reached as far as India and the Hindu Kush Mountains. One can imagine that Darius and later Xerxes ruled the entire civilized world at that time, excluding China. It is easy to imagine that all the wealth of that world was brought and collected in Persepolis. Even though after many years the Persian empire decreased significantly, the city was still intimidating with its wealth. The beautiful history of Persepolis fell into ruin only in 330 BC, when it was conquered by Alexander the Great. Alexander the Great, wanting to make up for the many years of oppression that the Greeks suffered at the hands of the Persians, plundered the most important temples. And he organized a great celebration in the city in honor of the victory. There are two versions here. One says it was accidentally, the other says it was intentionally set on fire during the event and destroyed. This is how the beautiful story of this wonder of the world, now included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, ended. Currently, Persepolis plays a very important role in the Iranian nation because it reminds Iranians of the former power of their country. Due to this, Perepolis is often used for propaganda purposes, as was the case in 1971, when the celebration of the 2500th anniversary of the establishment of the Iranian monarchy was organized among the ruins of Persepolis and it was one of the largest events in the modern world organized by Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

Aby dotrzeć do tego morza ruin najlepiej jest wziąć taksówkę, ponieważ Persepolis znajduje się zaledwie 70 km na północny wschód od Shirazu. Jego historia sięga 518 roku przed naszą erą kiedy to władca Persji Dariusz I rozpoczą budowę jego jako nowej ceremonialnej stolicy Persji. Prawdziwą świetlność miastu nadał nie Dariusz, ale jego syn Kserkses. Trzeba przyznać, że był to obrzydliwie bogaty władca, którego możemy poznać np. z filmu o 300 spartanach, w którym to Kserkses był władcą najeżdżającym starożytna Grecje. W swoim szczycie imperium Perskie obejmowało część Macedoni, całą Turcje , bliski wschód, część Egiptu, od północy sięgali aż po góry Kaukaz, a od wschodu doszli aż do Indii i gór Hindukusz. Można sobie wyobrazić, że Dariusz, a później Kserkses władali całym ówczesnym cywilizowanym światem, z wyłączeniem Chin. Łatwo sobie wyobrazić, że całe bogactwo tamtego świata było sprowadzana i gromadzone właśnie w Persepolis. Mimo, że po latach imperium Persów znacznie się zmniejszyło, to wciąż miasto onieśmielało swoim bogactwem. Piękna historia Persepolis legła w gruzach dopiero w roku 330 przed naszą erą, kiedy to zostało podbite przez Aleksandra Wielkiego. Aleksander Wielki chcąc powetować wiele lat uciemiężenia jakiego Grecy doznawali z rąk Persów splądrował najważniejsze świątynie. I urządził w mieście wielka fetę na cześć zwycięstwa. Tutaj wersje są dwie. Jedna mówi, że przypadkowo, a druga mówi, że intencjonalnie w trakcie imprezy miasto zostało podpalone i uległo zniszczeniu. Tak oto zakończyła się piękna historia tego cudu świata wpisanego obecnie na listę światowego dziedzictwa UNESCO. Obecnie Persepolis pełni bardzo ważną role w narodzie Irańskim, ponieważ przypomina Irańczykom o dawnej potędze swojego państwa. Przez to Perepolis jest często wykorzystywane w celach propagandowych, tak jak to miało miejsce w roku 1971 kiedy wśród ruin Persepolis zorganizowano obchody 2500 rocznicy powstania monarchii irańskiej i była to jedna z największych imprez współczesnego świata zorganizowana przez Mohammada Reza Pahlawiego.
