Good day community

The adventure to the Islands began by setting off from the port of the town of Cangas del Morrazo in the Vigo estuary located in the province of Pontevedra in the autonomous community of Galicia, Spain. A few years ago access to these islands, the National Park of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia, was free, but in recent years the demand to visit them has been so great that they began to restrict the number of visitors per day. I understand and appreciate this situation since preserving these Islands, their ecosystem, flora and fauna, should be the main objective to preserve this natural refuge at the entrance to the Vigo estuary in the Atlantic. I requested a reservation with the shipping company that makes this route in advance and when I got a date I launched myself into this fantastic trip first through the waters of the estuary until reaching the destination, the Cíes Islands.

The group is made up of three islands, one of which can be visited: Monteagudo in the north, and Faro in the middle, which is connected to San Martín in the south by a small bridge. As the boat got closer, it gave me clues about what I would find on this adventure to the islands and gave me an idea of the size and peculiarities of the terrain I would find. Near the small port, there was an area of rocks and small white sand beaches and a large moon-shaped beach. In the port, there was a small building converted into a restaurant, from where a walk began along a wooden walkway between the sand dunes that led you into the heart of the island's forest.

Once on dry land, I headed to the information and interpretation centre to obtain information and get an idea of how I could move around and visit all the places of interest. With a view of the beautiful beach of Rodas, I found out that this beach had been named by a prestigious British newspaper as “the best beach in the world in 2007” and also in 2024 by other media such as the “European Caribbean”. I was not very surprised by this information since the beauty I was observing attested to those statements and publications. I stayed observing this environment, both the beach and the lagoon that was formed in an intense blue and green, the so-called Children's Lake, in the middle of the two islands.

I started the climb to the lighthouse at the other end of the island facing the open ocean. After crossing the lake I went into a very wooded area with native species and Atlantic forest. I passed by some small houses that used to belong to people who lived on the island, by the campsite and a restaurant where I could sit down to have a coffee and enjoy the scenery. In one of the shops there were large binoculars and you could see the whole magnitude and the entrance to the Vigo estuary, a formidable spectacle. I continued along the winding path that took me deeper into the forest to climb to the top of the largest hill and thus have some views from above, also with the intention of reaching the lighthouse.

As dusk fell, I began to descend from the top of the island until I reached the port where the boat that would take us back to the town of Cangas was waiting for us. At that time the sea was beginning to get a little rough and I found this situation to be an exciting adventure. In the ocean and with the sun setting behind the islands, the spectacle of light and colour was truly fascinating
