THE PADMA AWARDS : Stories of these 3 winners will surely leave you inspired.

in #india6 years ago

Over the years the state awards have many times been accused of being biased and saying that it is a tool by the Government to reward those people who support their ideology and Vision. But unlike every other past Government this one has taken a different route. Rather than handing over the awards to people who please them, they rewarded it those people who have shown examplary skill and motivation to uplift the living status of not only mankind but also of that of animals. Although all the 112 people who have won these awards have their own very exciting and unique story these three struck me the most for their innovative idea and facing the a totally different challenge and still not backing down.

1.The Surgeon on a holy mission to diffuse Population Explosion

Since 1993, after reading the book 'The Population Bomb' , which left an impact on him, Dr. Ilias Ali has been on a holy mission. The retired surgeon traverses like a nomad to advocate birth control, especially among Assam’s rural Muslim populace. Dr Illias Ali has travelled on bullock carts, motor bikes and country boats, convincing people of the poorest, most backward regions to adopt family planning and birth control measures. He mostly works in the state’s Bengali Muslim settlements where people view vasectomy and the use of contraceptive pills as un-Islamic. But the journey so far has been rife with hurdles considering strong religious attitude of population in rural India. Resistance is common, yet he has been able to motivate over 55,000 people to go for vasectomy.

Dr Ali says that the only way India can prosper is if the country priorities the issue of population. He is also known for speaking out against polygamy and child marriage. His message is that if we don’t diffuse this ‘population bomb’, the earth will be destroyed. Recognition of his contribution to society is a delightful news.

2.Lady Tarzan of Jharkhand

For years, the dense sal forest of Jharkhand were plundered by the forest mafia, till a 17 year young bride from Orissa raised her voice. Incensed to see mafia chopping down forest with a complete disregard for the law and bewildered by the passive response of the community, Jamuna decided to take matters in her own hands.

She mobilised a group of 25 women from the village, armed them with bows and arrows, lathis and spears, and marched into the forest to take on the intruders. They patrol the jungle in three shifts a day – morning, noon and evening. People in eastern Jharkhand call her Jungle Queen and Lady Tarzan with love and affection.

Today, she runs awareness campaigns through various forest committees and around 150 committees, comprising more than 6,000 members, have joined her movement to save the forests.

3.German Woman who dedicated her life to Serve Cows.

Friederike Irina Bruning (Sudevi Mataji) is a 60-year-old German woman who came to India from Berlin in 1978 as a tourist. She arrived in Radha Kund, Mathura, to look for a guru, as she believed one needed a guru to progress in life. But her life completely changed after her neighbour suggested she buy a cow. She soon came to care deeply for the bovines.

What bothered her the most was that people abandoned cows once they grew old and stopped giving milk. While such cows are a daily sight to millions, Bruning decided to do something about it. Bruning started a cowshed called Surabhi Gauseva Niketan, for which she fondly came to be known as Sudevi Mataji.

Once a cow reaches her cowshed, she takes complete care of the animal by providing food and medicine. There are about 60 workers at the cowshed, and as much as ₹22 lakh is spent every month on their salaries, foodgrain and medicines to take care of 1200 cows. Friederike facing financial challenge to sustain gaushala as it’s not easy to spend that much amount. Initially her father used to send money, but now he is a senior citizen. She utilizes all the fund she gets from renting her property in Berlin. However, she is resolved to continue with her mission. She exemplifies Indian culture of deep love for animals and especially bovines.
