A hard fork occurs when a decentralized network executes a consensus-breaking change. A group of network nodes may agree with the change, while another group disagrees. The network diverges into two forked groups because of the disagreement or unwillingness to change the node software. Hard forks are also a way to deploy major upgrades to the software running on the network nodes.
