Working Decisions.....

in #inleo3 months ago

So my current 'regular' top-up income job is quite cushty... it involves driving around the countryside doing short interviews with what seems to be zero pressure on the response rate.

Moreover I really don't get many interviews. The vast majority of the time I drive somewhere and either no one is in or I get told to F off, usually politely, again my employer seems MOST unconcerned about the lack of responses.

For this very easy job I get paid about £40K a year FTE once I factor everything in.

NB I only work every other week, there is scope for more, but I've been doing less, I have been tempted to up my hours and make hay while the sun shines!

It's freelance, and come to think of it just now it's probably more than that as I get holiday pay on top.

The downsides of this job are basically six fold...

  1. There's no sense of purpose. There is literally no value in what i do.
  2. I kind of can't believe it's going to carry on like this! This is firmly in the too good to be true category.
  3. There is no job security, it's Freelance, sometimes there may be no work.
  4. There's no prospects, no future.
  5. Lots of driving, new roads - accident risk
  6. There is a slight chance of being mauled by dogs.

However at the end of the day it's easy money for relatively easy work.

A new job opportunity...

Today I noticed an ad for a part-time job with Citizens Advice. It's 2-3 days a week (successful candidate chooses), it's basically the same tasks as was associated with my recent volunteering role, so I have a good chance of getting it, but it's much worse paid. It's £24K pro-rata, that's low pay already, but it's almost half of what I'm earning ATM...

But the upsides are basically the opposite of what's above...

  1. Lots of purpose - helping people.
  2. Massive job security - well, it's only for a year funded this post, but once you've got one roll, you're on a role!
  3. There's lots of future prospects - I'm considering doing a Masters in social policy anyway, this touches on housing, benefits, migration, LOTS!
  4. I can walk there! No driving time.
  5. It's safe!

Final thoughts...

I think I've just talked myself into applying for a job that pays half as much as what I'm earning ATM.

It's just the sense of purpose, progress and security.

And combined with my other incomes, it's easily enough to live off!

I mean I might not get it, but I think it's worth a go!

Sometimes when you accept a job with a lower salary you lose something in money but you gain in many other aspects... And often money is not the most important aspect.

I only know you through the posts you write and the comments we exchange but I confess that it is enough to really have a lot of respect for you, in my opinion you are a very deep and thoughtful person and it would be great to exchange a few words over a good coffee! (only I am very bad with English, lol!)

Oh and then your Avatar is too cool in my opinion!

A Hug!

Hey cheers! I do feel that I need a little more. Always up for coffee!

It would make a fantastic coffee and in life they say never say never, right? ;-)

Wouldn't it be possible to do both jobs at the same time?

It doesn't quite work out unfortunately!

There's something to be said for job satisfaction. With all the time we spend working it makes you feel better to have some purpose. I have to wonder how your current one can afford to pay you if they are not that bothered about results. A lot of people just have to take whatever they can get. I'm fairly happy with my job and glad I gave up the old one that was getting me down. The travel was part of that.

I hope you find fulfilment.

It's a constant wonder re the current one - I think the main reason is that no one cares about the results!

Good luck!!
