The immediate reaction of anyone hearing about this news would be one of bewilderment. Anything unusual that we discover about space or in space is sure to get everybody's attention and this latest news out of China seems to be having the exact same response.
China has claimed that its Yutu-2 lunar rover has come across a colorful gel-like substance. Now, for anyone who knows a little about the lunar surface, this will come as an eyebrow raiser as one would expect everything to be grey, or one of its many shades.
One would definitely not expect a colorful substance, that too a gel-like one. But that is what the rover has allegedly discovered at the bottom of an impact crater on the dark side of the moon. The discovery was made just as the rover was about to take one its scheduled naps, which it has to take during the day to protect the onboard instruments from the heat of the overhead sun.
Theories?
The important point to note here is that this mysterious and shiny substance is very different from the soil around it. So, something must have happened for it to be present there.
Of course, the very first thing that crosses everyone's minds is aliens! Many decades of movies have implanted the idea in our heads that whenever there is something gooey and mysterious in space, it has to be aliens!
And even though the chances are infinitesimal, it cannot be ruled out completely. Some scientists have suggested however that this could be some form of a glass that was formed when the original impact event happened that resulted in the formation of the crater.
Even though the rover has done some analyses on the substance already, it is still not sure what the substance really is and the Chinese Space Agency is apparently being very vague about the said substance. This will surely be an interesting news to follow.
