My laundry room makeover

in Architecture+Design11 days ago (edited)

At the end of December 2024, I decided to start yet another renovation project in my home. This time, it was the laundry room—one of the only spaces I hadn’t touched or changed since moving into this house. My plan was to spend as little money as possible, using only some leftover paint I already had at home, making the most of my materials and avoiding any extra costs.

Even without spending much, I wanted the renovation to feel special and, above all, creative, because the laundry room has always been the hardest place for me to keep organized. I thought that if I made it look beautiful, it might inspire me to keep it tidy. I came up with the idea of painting stripes on one of the walls using red paint I already had. To do this, I used tape to mark out the stripes. In the photo, it might not look super straight, but trust me, in real life, it turned out much better.

In addition to the red stripes, I left a space above the sink for a more creative and, I’d say, original touch: hand-drawn "tiles." To make these, I used colorful school markers—yes, I know it’s a bit unconventional. After drawing the designs, I sealed the tiles with a clear varnish spray meant for crafts.

The choice of thematic designs for the tiles was a bit random, as I didn’t have many references to work with. In the moment, I simply went with the motifs I felt like drawing, searching for references as needed and creating the compositions on the spot. It was all very spontaneous, with no real planning—just unfolding naturally as I painted.

I also painted the rest of the laundry room in a light blue shade, and I gave the shelf above the washing machine a red makeover. To pull it all together, I added some decorative touches. Since the room has a lot of items on display—everyday essentials and utility products—I wanted everything exposed to look as good as possible. I initially searched online for stylish dispensers to replace the standard, unattractive cleaning product bottles, but everything I found felt too basic, overly minimalist, or just not "me."

So, I decided to design my own labels for the cleaning dispensers. I created hand-drawn designs that matched the aesthetic of the patterns I had already painted on the walls. Once the designs were ready, I sent them to a print shop to be turned into stickers, which I then applied to the bottles. Now, everything in my laundry room feels personalized, unique, and truly mine.

This renovation ended up being a lot more work than I expected. I thought I’d be able to finish it in just two days, but once again, I was wrong—it took me over a week to get everything done. Balancing my regular work, daily life responsibilities, and this project was no small feat. But in the end, the result truly surprised me, and I’m really happy with how it turned out. I hope you enjoyed it too! I can’t wait to share more projects I’m working on this year. See you soon!

The color red symbolizes energy, passion, and love. It's definitely the perfect choice for the vertical stripes in an active environment like a laundry room. Congrats @silviamaria on your amazing project! ☺️
