Don’t you love image creation from AI? To enhance a story…yes, not to re-write everything for you that would be inhuman and quite frankly boring as fuck!
You would not get such pointed profanity from any AI engine yet, though I'm sure it's coming. I will have to spread out my Urban Explorer posts a little for fear of running short of content, so music ones may appear more frequently.
That's not going to happen for a while but I will be feeding them out liberally from now, until next March when the new season starts (for me!). Crawling along freezing-wet walls is not my thing.
...'the Bing AI creator is decent but tends to spell my name wrong. I think the one at the bottom could have been the winner but 'Slobberhops' just isn't good enough'...
Enough with the banter, let’s get you all miserable by listening to Goth music, which while intense can also cause you to slit your wrists if you listen to enough of it.
Bird of Passage – The Mission (Grains of Sand – 1990)
I must have bought ‘Grains of Sand’ in 1991 or so, or I would not be aware of this longish depressing ballad. Wayne croons through this piano-led piece bestowing pure misery on the unsuspecting listener about 'a lump in his throat and an ache in his heart’.
It’s not your typical ‘Mission' song which tends to be loud and noisy but what struck me was the lovely piano work. I want to be to play that.
Around 4 minutes or so, 'Bird of Passage' breaks out into a spiraling piano piece that given the time and space to set up my faulty vintage synthesizer, I would pursue to learn by ear and play it.
Like the best musicians I never learned the theory or to read music. That’s where the likeness ends; I am not a decent keyboard player, more a cheap imitator.
Israel – Siouxsie And The Banshees (Single – 1980)
There could be deliberation about the fact, ‘Are ‘Siouxsie And The Banshees' a Goth band? They changed so much in six or seven years, that they could be labelled, Punk, New Wave, or Goth.
The fact that Goth didn't really exist in 1980 is a testament to a trend-setting band and image that survived all those incarnations and came out of the other end unscathed.
The black makeup and dark deathly sound of 'Israel’ hooked me from my first listen which would have been at release time. I bought the picture cover 7’ single, that depicts the Star of David and now sells for the best part of £10 in the condition mine was.
Even all those years ago, the seed of weird music ran through my veins. 'Siouxsie And The Banshees' were not a popular band and tended to enter the lower tier of the top 40. That was enough for me to hear about them and their latest hit.
With all the unrest in the Middle East, this one felt appropriate though the relevance of the lyrics is questionable.
No Time to Cry – The Sisters of Mercy (First and Last and Always – 1985)
If you're talking 'Goth', then you MUST include something from these masters. The master title in my opinion went out of the window at the end of their debut album which is a genre masterpiece.
Andrew Eldritch mumbles his way through the first part of the verse with the listener thinking, 'can you speak the fuck up, I can't hear you'.
He then mumbles several decibels louder that 'he gets frightened, just like you'. If you met this bloke in a dark alley I think anyone would be frightened at the sight presented.
Talk about misrepresented comedy. I have chucked at that line more than once. If you are in awe of Goth music, I would implore you to listen to all of ‘First and Last and Always'.
It's quite some musical feat and with several members of the soon-to-be 'The Mission' shows its class, style, and quality.
What could be next, Punk Classics? Was there any such thing or was it all a load of noisy talentless shit?

Oh, God, no! Anything but THAT!
What would I do, play Splinterlands all day? Ack..., unthinkable!
Andrew Eldritch, God to all who gothed!! Hehe, I did have a right soft spot for the Sisters Of Mercy!
If you remember the videos for that time of this band, they were always shrouded with fog, everyone wore cowboy hats, and dark glasses. The band were an enigma!
Oh I remember them well. Despite being into metal and dressing as such I had lots of Goth friends and was regularly subjected to such sights as well as deep down thinking it was cool. I keep trying to convince the missus we need a smoke machine for Halloween but I'm really it is just for me at the weekend 🤣🤣
Hey, nice to see you doing a proper three tune tuesday post! I hear you about running out of content. I am just about done with my posts about Vermont and I am afraid it is going to be a long winter from there on out! Nice picks. I'm pretty straight laced, so I've always had a bit of a thing for that Goth vibe.
I'm not running out, but the future is going to give me diminishing returns. Everywhere is so far away, and travelling 75 miles to find somewhere is sealed isn't fun at all.
I can appreciate that!
I was never that into the goth stuff, but some of it got in the charts. A guy I worked with was in a band with Wayne Hussey in his early days. Some of the old guard are still performing, but are there many young goths now?
I do put on these Goth compilations sometimes when I'm doing stuff in the house, just for some noise. It's usually material from the last century, so probably not!
What did your colleague say about Mr Hussey?
I didn't get too much from him about Wayne. I think it was a teenage thing and my mate went into IT rather than music. He was a drummer.
Three solid songs! I haven't heard any of them in a long time though, it's been years! I was in Junior High and High School in the 80's so I know all of them pretty well, good tunes.
I don't blame you for not wanting to explore at the moment, it's grim out there! Great choices man, have to say that I'd heard none of these as they are slightly before my time. I do love a bit of Goth though. My go to band have always been Type O Negative although recently Unto Others have also made a big impression on me.
Thanks for the tips. I sometimes add a playlist when I'm doing something, hoping I can hear something good. Will try these.
No worries man. Thanks for the post. First one by Unto Others I heard is called 'Don't Waste Your Time' and they had me at that. Enjoy dude!
Siouxsie is forever love from my student uni days, along with the Doors, Cure, Jethro Tull. I received their 'Singles' compilation CD as one of my birthday gifts from my student friends. They had unique sound and visual side I am still attracted to. But with years I understood about myself, that I am more into other types of female vocal. Less rigid, more warm ant 'mother-caring' maybe, sort of. Oh, and nowadays I'd rather prefer 'Israelites' by Desmond Dekker 🙏
Well, there's nothing warm about her voice, I know your posted song, it was a hit here when I was barely born.
was it Andrew Sisters 'Rum & Cola'?.. 😍
I hadn't listened to gothic in a while, although I tend to listen to bands like Lacrimosa or Otto Dix's darkwave, etc.
