We got out for a nice #wednesdaywalk hike yesterday.
We hiked along the Long Trail from the Brandon Gap to the new Sunrise Shelter.
The hike was about 2.8 miles in and then 3.3 miles back ๐ Fitbit has a little trouble tracking your hike when you are in an area without cell access to GPS. According to those old paper maps, it was about 2.9 miles each way.
The destination was the new Sunrise Shelter. It provides a place to overnight for through hikers on the Long Trail (and a composting toilet in a separate building) The shelter was complete in 2022. More info on the Green Mountain Clubs website here --->Green Mountain Club
The Green Mountain Club has an ambitious plant to remodel, repair or replace 3 shelters a year over the next 25 years. I don't have any 25 year planning cycles in my life ๐
The views are nice from the shelter.
Mostly pine around the shelter but we did hike up through some nice stretches of hard wood forest that will be showing colors soon. We had a nice lunch and then hiked back down. Great #wednesdaywalk but your #wednesdaywalk doesn't have to be this ambitious, just take a break, get outside, and be focused ๐

The shelter looks like a great spot for escaping the bear attacks. My mother in law worked for the forest preserve in AZ and would have to do various maintenance building projects at the end of desolate trails. It involved hauling lumber and building supplies via donkey and mule to the spot.
That would be very cool to work with pack animals. The shelter didn't have a bear box which some of the only hiking forums lamented but hauling in a heavy steel box would probably have been too much for the construction crew. I was very interested in the construction. There were proper cement pilings supporting the shelter I was surprised to see that given getting materials in to this location had to be tough.
I read more online and they used a helicopter to air drop in materials! they should have brought a bear box ๐
Wow that is much easier than packing a concrete mixer up the mountain.
