Cupboards are Bare

I am off on a work trip tomorrow morning, which suffice to say, is going to be interesting. The topic is on usecases for generative-AI and AI-automation tasks in their organization, and it is going to be with a group of pretty smart people, considering that they build and send stuff into space. But you know, the average person has nothing to worry about - AI isn't going to replace their jobs.

I was talking with a friend today and they were telling me about their family, and some of the struggles different members are going through. And, it isn't an uncommon story. It seems that a lot of people are struggling these days, with "life" mounting up or rather, people getting bent over and life mounting them. I think that the massive increase in mental health problems is largely due to the way we have designed our world.

The problem is that we have made other humans pretty irrelevant in order to satisfy ourselves. So much of what we used to need others for, we now purchase a substitute in some form or another, and pretend that it is delivering what we need, as well as what we want. Whenever we are hungry, we order a delivery. Whenever we are bored, we turn to a screen. Whenever we need something repaired, we hire a stranger that we barely interact with. Whenever we are lonely, well, we swipe for company, or buy a toy to satisfy us. People are still there, but it is transactionary, rather than based on familiarity.

I remember reading about why runway models are all pretty much looking the same and with the same body types, which is bad form today, because it isn't "inclusive" of other body types. However, for the most part, those runway collections are one-off pieces, or very limited run for the shows only. This means that no matter where they are, they have to be able to find models that fit, otherwise the cost of production is too high. One designer said that the models are just "coat hangers" to display the clothes, not the show itself.

The audience is looking at the wrong thing.

And I think that is what is happening in society now, where we are looking at the wrong causes for the symptoms. We are diagnosing the problems incorrectly, either unintentionally, or on purpose. I suspect for some things like "climate change", it is intentional, because they have taken what everyone agree with, reduce pollution, and turned it into something that people can argue about, without actually having to change anything. It is similar for processed foods, sugars, additives and the like. Even nicotine has been rebranded as something that can be questioned, or mitigated - vapes aren't as bad as smoking.

We have created a sick world, and I don't just mean the way people behave - I mean, literally sick. Mental illness, physical illness, emotional illness - there really doesn't seem to be any really healthy people anymore. Everyone has some kind of chronic issue, some disorder, depression, or whatever. Like, everyone. How many people do you know who are actually generally healthy across the board?

I don't think I know any.

At least, not any adults.

And many children are having issues too. And it isn't like the Black Death plagues of ages gone, but of just the way we are living. We have structured our world to promote sickness, not health. And, the reason is because we use the monetary system as an indicator of advancement and improvement, rather than the human outcomes of our choices and actions.

"Success" is getting rich, not being healthy.

And, this is another factor that drives people away from each other, making the relationships transaction based. Because, people are in it for themselves, to maximize themselves, while the businesses are in it for themselves, maximizing profits. In the end, while more money might be generated, the overall health of society is in rapid decline. As all the countries are now clambering to up defense spending, be assured, that life is going to get even worse for the average person.

At least we can ask AI what to do.

What is the worst thing to do when bored?

The "worst" thing to do when bored depends on your perspective, but here are some generally unhelpful or harmful activities to avoid:

  1. Negative Habits
Overindulging in Social Media: Endless scrolling can leave you feeling drained or envious instead of entertained.
Overeating or Junk Snacking: Eating out of boredom, not hunger, can harm your health.
  2. Counterproductive Actions
Procrastination: Letting boredom steer you away from responsibilities can increase stress later.
Mindless Binge-Watching: Watching hours of content you’re not even enjoying just to pass the time.
  3. Risky or Harmful Behaviors
Picking Fights Online or Offline: Engaging in pointless arguments just to feel something.
Impulsive Spending: Online shopping out of boredom can lead to regret and financial strain.
Reckless Experiments: Trying dangerous stunts or pranks for a "thrill."
  4. Unnecessary Self-Criticism
Overthinking or dwelling on negative thoughts can worsen your mood and make boredom feel overwhelming.

What are most people doing with their lives?

I am not doing anything spectacular with my life, I do what I enjoy doing. I take pleasures in simple everyday things, I have a great wife, son and daughter. I am not rich, but I pretty much have everything I need. I workout to keep myself healthy and for the most part my job is not stressful with some exceptions like the last week.

For me success is being able to do what you enjoy most of the day.

For me success is being able to do what you enjoy most of the day.

This resonates, but also makes me wonder. What if "what we enjoy" is not actually what helps us? What if we have been conditioned to want what isn't good for us, that which doesn't support us? What if we are programmed to continually choose "wellbeing failure"?

Simple is good.

Yeah, some of the things that "we enjoy" are definitely not good for us, for example sugar laced food that I love so much. Other examples are the "do nothing" that most of us will choose if we had that choice. Those things you kind of have to fight through and control.

I wonder if it was such a fight to control ourselves earlier.

I've often thought about a lot of these chronic diseases. it seems like every couple of years they come out with something new that just about everyone suffers from.

We really have created a sick world, different illnesses springing up from different areas. I don't know how all these will end, but I hope we somehow will be okay.

Really deep things you talked about, a good read. Thanks for sharing.

You can't make money off healthy people so this is infinitely better and must stay this way or the entire economy will collapse and burn.

I hope it collapses and burns very ignomiously with no one caring because we've moved on to anything better

I'm not bored today. I drank a cup of coffee and read your post, and also shorted the Moscow Exchange index with 5 leverage :) Soon I will go for a walk and look at my smartphone, if my trade closes in positive territory, today I will be very pleased.

It’s crazy how much we rely on things that give us short-term satisfaction, like scrolling through social media or ordering food, instead of building deeper, more meaningful connections.

I feel like a lot of people are stuck in this cycle, especially with everything that’s happening in the world. It makes you wonder what the real definition of success is, and if we’re prioritizing the right things. It’s tough, but I think we have to start focusing more on our health mentally, physically, and emotionally before anything else.
