Hello Hello Hivians and fellow travellers.
If you are like me then you might from time to time no notice what is under your nose or in this case what is almost on your doorstep.
And so it was that I discovered The STUMPERY at the Kirkcaldy War Memorial and Library/Art Gallery Complex.
Wrap up warm and let's go!
This was from the afternoon of Saturday 24th February 2024. I dropped off Mrs T at her crochet club at the War Memorial Complex and in theory was to go shopping but I got sidetracked by what you are about to see!
I am not sure about you, but here we have had a pretty grey and quite wet February.
So when I glimpsed some blue sky, I just had to show some people overseas our blue sky!
We have rather a unique war memorial in that it houses an art gallery, library and cafe as well.
This is the indoor complex and is in part described by the war memorials register as
Kirkcaldy Museum, Art Gallery and Public Library and the surrounding gardens. A cenotaph with the dedication and a wall with plaques of names fronts the museum building. The buildings and garden were bequeathed to the town of Kirkcaldy as a war memorial by linoleum manufacturer John Nairn in memory of his son, Ian Nairn.
Yes we even have sun sometimes!
Well sometimes I wonder what season the end of February is, but I think when we see the naked trees like this, then we are still in Winter!
So I took a few pictues of the sun, blue sky trees and some architecture, then turned around and started to head up the path.
Well I managed four steps when I decide to look down ,,,
I saw that the trunk, and decided to look at it...
STUMPERY
With support from Fife Council this area is being developed by Growing Kirkcaldy as a "STUMPERY"
Ferns would be planted in September 2019.
Interestingly this was not long before Covid.
There are a few sections to the Stumpery that are divided by paths.
This was the top section and you can see that wee sign on the right in the ground.
The path leads to the train station, that is the building with blue roof. The black hole is an underpass tunnel and I use it to head to the Aldi supermarket.
Another section and now I can why they call it the Stumpery.
Do you see all the tree stumps?
Loads of them, I have been here a couple of times and I never twigged (sorrynotsorry for the pun) it was deliberate!
Interesting I saw that sign and took a picture. Growing Kirkcaldy...
Do you believe in Manifestation and the Power of The Universe...
I certainly believe there is something in it with The Universe and I am particular in what language I use...
I was online yesterday and it came in a news item on my google feed they wanted volunteers and board members...
So I had a wee search and saw this on X (formerly Twitter)
They are also on Facebook with a community page
Actually the facebook page was quite interesting as it has pictures and posts of The Stumpery being build so to speak.
I found out they also maintain the gardens at The War Memorial where we are.
But back the stumps in hand
Spring is coming though.
I was pleasantly surprised to some flowers...
One of the flowers that remind me of Spring are Primroses...
They come in so many colours as these golden yellow and dark red ones show.
The easiest way for me anyway to identify them is by their leaves.
What do you think?
More of the sections divided by the path.
I think the volunteers did a good job?
More flowers that remind me of Spring are crocuses...
Do you call those mushrooms or toadstools?
Talking of fungi, I love tree stumps or logs as they often showus wonders like what I saw.
Is the daffodil. I remember rugby international matches where the Welsh fans had huge leeks and daffodils.
I can't not show the gorgeous golden yellow crocuses now can I?!?
Being a war memorial we have lots of poppy wreaths laid by individuals or organisations.
I saw these that had been burnt by neds, I know what I would do if I found these responsible.
Our ancestors gave their lives to keep these islands free and this is how people treat them.
The yellow in amongst all the stumps looks really pretty.
And now to those ferns of 2019.
And this was us back at the beginning, but wait do you see the sign?
I do love knowing what is around us!
One last look at a fern.
If you are in the area it is well worth having a wee look!
Oh heck I need to skedaddle and not be late to meet Mrs T!
This post is also my last February 2024 walk for #wednesdaywalk which was started by the wonderful @tattoodjay.

I don't think I have ever heard of a stumpery before. It's kind of cool. That building looks pretty amazing. I can understand why you decided to take your walk here. The grounds are wonderful.
Yeah I had never heard of a stumpery. Then when I saw what they had done, it works really well. That is one great thing about the UK, we have so many green areas in our city centers.
Wow, these are truly nice pics boss boss. The initiative to start growing stumprey os also great. Thus is contributing to a better ecosystem.
Well done Scotland
The view is amazing! Sometimes we have so many beautiful things around us we barely notice. This was a very nice read😊
Thank you for taking us on this walk. It was wonderful. Your photos are great, but I assume nature was even more beautiful. Wish I could be there. Thanks to your photos and descriptions we can have some enjoyment for sure :)
I always primroses as pink. the term that always comes to my mind is 'primroses in every nook and cranny' and the visualization was with the pin primrose. I never knew there was a white, and that beautiful golden yellow one too.
Daffodils are another poetic favorite of mine, thanks to Wordsworth. I had not realized I had never paid attention to the actual flower till I saw your wonderful pic.
Once again thanks for sharing this wonderful effort by the Growing K team.
Cheers from another #dreemerforlife
a great idea. most often they'd be torn out the ground in such an area. but this gives a nice natural and wilded area which is great for biodiversity, and as the stumps rot down they provide nutrients for the ground.
more interesting than another patch of grass
Whenever I see or read about war memorials, my mind goes to many people that sacrificed their lives for generations yet unborn.
I am hearing of stumpery for first time.
I popped in from #dreemport because I am a #dreemerforlife
That looks like a great walk, too bad it's a bit chilly still but the flowers don't seem to mind. Stumpery? It should turn out nice when they're done. Nice park to get out and walk!
