Early this year the new Goldbacks for the State of Florida were put on sale to investors. These are artistic bills micro deposited with a certain quantity of pure gold. It makes investing in small amounts of gold much more feasible to the average person, especially as gold prices approach $3,000 per Troy ounce. I have picked up a few of the smaller ones, but have not yet ventured into the more expensive one's with more gold, yet...
In some past posts I have shared some of the historical details surrounding the images on these Goldbacks. Today I wanted to do the same with the 10 Goldbacks from Florida. This one is titled Innovation, celebrating human innovation in Florida. I have spent a lot time in Florida over the years and really enjoy the state. First off take a look at all the details they incorporate into this work of art, it's beautiful!
Just for some background to get started. In the late 1800's the way to travel anywhere was the train. There weren't cars available nor aircraft, so it was the train or your horse. This was the age of the incredibly rich industrialists with names like Rockefeller and Carnegie.
Then in the 1920 the women's suffrage movement freed women in the United States like never before. The Twenties were a time of abundance and wealth in the nation as well. Here we see a young woman wearing a flapper dress that was very popular in the 1920s. She embodies innovation is this Goldback.

This ambitious project was the brainchild of Henry Flagler who was a partner of John D. Rockefeller in Standard Oil making him one of the wealthiest men in the United States and the world. Rockefeller credited him as the brains behind the operation and it wouldn't have happened without him. Flagler was also a big railroad owner, and it had made him very rich. He set out to create a railroad from Miami to Key West, which was the southern most point in the Untied States. It would follow the chain of islands that form the Florida Keys crossing large spans of open ocean. It was first time such a project had ever been attempted and would eliminate the need of boats to travel to the Keys.
Construction started in 1905 and lasted until 1912 and employed 4,000 men. It cost a hefty sum of $50 million dollars which is worth more than $1.3 billion dollars today. Many thought Flagler to be crazy and called the project Flagler's Folly, but in the end it was a success. It was in operation from 1912 until 1935 when parts of the track were damaged beyond repair in the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. It was a category 5 storm and said to be the storm of the century killing 400 people.
After the storm the remaining track was sold to the state of Florida that turned much of it into a highway than connected Miami and Key West. Trains were no longer needed as as the automobile was taking over America. But one of the trains that ran the route is still on dispaly at the Gold Coast Railroad Museum in Miami, Florida. It was the inspiration behind the train on the Goldback.

Bottlenose Dolphin

The bottlenose dolphin is mammal that considered one of the most intelligent animals on the planet. Even higher on the intelligence scale than a chimpanzee. They are found in tropical to subtropical oceans around the world . I recall several times fishing off of Miami I would see these creatures jumping and playing in the boat's wake. They can jump up to twenty feet out of the water and are amazing beautiful animals.
They have been used by militaries to locate under water mines as well as to find divers and even tag the enemy divers. In the wild they will frequently cooperate with fisherman to help corral fish into their nets, in return the fisherman share some of the fish with the dolphins. They are frequently used in shows around the world and used in human/ dolphin encounters. If you ever get a chance that's a fun experience. Although I've always felt bad for the one's in captivity, but in truth they probably live a much better life than those living in the open oceans. Not nearly as much as adventure though...
Cabot's Tern

The Cabot's tern has only recently been recognized as it's own species separating it from the sandwich tern. They are seafaring birds found throughout much of the coastlines of North and South America, as well as the Caribbean. These are fun birds to watch when you are fishing! They dive into to water from around 25 feet up going after small fish and are really good at it. Typically you can see them in Florida which is why they are included on the Goldback!

That's a pretty cool looking note. I'd love to visit Key West sometime. My wife's aunt used to live down there, but she moved back to Michigan before I ever got a chance to visit her.

That's a very rich history there. I watched a lot of American 1800s film and the history behind them and they were always intriguing. Imagine how far technology has come in over 200 years with the airplanes and advanced means of transplant
What a great note! Love how it entails the states history and things that are still available to see in Florida. I absolutely like old trains. I couldn't but be reminded of that show on the History Channel, *The Men that Built America. * I've seen every one of them and most of them few times over, haha.
Shame the US closed down much of the passenger trains. If they had been constantly updated instead, the US could have a train system on par with Japan today. Oh well.

It's quite a good and informative read to know about the 10 Goldbacks from Florida. In Nigeria the means of transportation at about the 1800 are camels, donkeys, horses, and of course walking (the use of legs). Then bush paths are used to link nearby villages. The use of canoe was also popular at that time especially in riverine areas.
But it's quite interesting to know the extent to which the World has developed now. Transportation is now easy, fast and seamless.
