Have You Ever Been So Broke You Have To Make All Christmas Gifts?

in #christmas6 years ago

I didn't think I would hit this low after 32 years of being comfortable. But LIFE happens and wrenches get thrown into the gears of smooth rolling. July was a tough month for me. Not only was I diagnosed with diabetes type 2 but I had 5 blocked arteries on my heart and had to have a heart stent. Only one out of five could be fixed. Talk about a life slap! To add to all this, the last two months the bills have started to roll in and roll over my budget like a steamroller. I'm so broke I'm forced to make all my Christmas gifts this year.

I have an abundance of craft supplies which makes things easier. Yarn, material, thread all make for a good start to making some really nice gifts for people who mean a lot to me. For the women in my life, they are easy. I'm making some cute neck warmers and for those with long hair some crochet hair bands. I will also be making little fabric houses with windows made of template plastic and a battery light.

The guys are a bit trickier. Why are guys so hard to make gifts for! Sure I can crochet a scarf and make a quilt but what else can I make? I did make some awesome homemade granola this year and of course I make my grandparents homemade potato sausage that is to die for. Sometimes that doesn't seem to be enough. That is where I have a problem with Christmas!

The commercials of people buying a vehicle for someone for Christmas turns my stomach. I actually knew someone who bought their wife a new car for a Christmas present! Get real! As I have written last year, I don't like Christmas. I hate the trees, the decorations, wrapping gifts, shopping & store music. If you didn't read my blog from last year about store music, please read it. A store had the most hideous music playing, I wanted to start stabbing people! It was like chipmunk music, not kidding.

Back to making gifts....I have been spending Christmas with some friends the past few years as my adult children get over whatever it is I did. Their daughter is always excited to get something handmade from me, which makes me feel great. Christmas is really about getting together to celebrate the birth of Jesus, people forget that! The rest is whoha made up by stores. Nothing says "you are special" more than a homemade gift! The planning, thought & effort make the gift that much more special, IMO.

Making gifts, getting together, remembering Jesus and being thankful for life's little things, like being alive, is what matters most. Life is precious. I sometimes forget that when staring at $2500 worth of bills I can't pay fast enough. Peaks & valleys is what life is. Right now I'm in a valley. The Lord is by my side, my health has been improved~slightly~lol, but I am important, even when I'm broke.
