Ok, tell me if this is not one hella super duper cool way of drinking any kind of drinks or in this case, alcoholic drinks. I just found out about this drink not too long ago when we were traveling around in northern Thailand as well. I find it's one of the coolest inventions I have ever come across and here to share it with you Hive people!
Lao U (pronounced Ooh! but like, really shortly.) or Lao Hai
Lao means alcoholic drinks in Thai
Hai means that brown jug you see in the photos
Oooh.. now it starts to make sense!
The drink is brewed with glutinous rice or sticky rice, sugar and yeast.. You can see it fermented in your imagination already I can tell! It's covered with a few types of grains on top, with a layer of cement as well just to make sure no air gets in. How intense is that!
So yes, before getting into the jug next time, you kind of need some skills and a little effort. We even use a knife to crack the hard layer and it was kind of fun.
What's cool is that, after we let it fermented till the point it's ready, you can mix and match it with so many thing you can think of. Imagine, water, soda, juice, and so on. This time we went with water first just to see how it would taste and then a few bottles of soda and yes, it can contains a lot of bottles.. If I remember it correctly (yes, we were a little drunk you know) it's filled with 2.5 bottles of soda.
They also provide this special kind of straw made of natural material. Not quite sure if it's bamboo? It's quite long though so that you can stick it in really deep into the bottom of the brown jug. It also has a filter inside so you don't have to suck all those grain when drinking it. (I told you it was cool!!!)
The drink we pour in go mixed with the fermented stuff in the jug. It's quite sweet.. like, pretty sweet. The flavor of alcohol on the other hand not that strong but for some reason, we got hella drunk so dang quick (I think that's a thing for alcohol and sugar.)
What's funny though is that, whatever goes into that jar, when we drink it, it all tastes the same #lol Isn't that weird?? Also, how cold the drink is we put in, it comes out room tempurature! Whattttt??!
Alright, you see now that it was not a click bait. This drink is actually pretty cool! ***Lao U or Lao Hai *** can be found in northern Thai area and yes, that's where we found it and got to know about it. I think it's dang of a super cool idea and just would love to share and maybe give you a good idea of what it is exactly when you travel around and see one of this next time.
