One of the most valuable features of traditional Tunisian architecture is , its beautiful studded doors. Contrary to popular belief, their leaves are not all painted in blue. In the medina of Tunis, a plethora of doors more beautiful than the others present various colors and decorations.
This photo was taken in Dar El Jeld Street, and this house has been converted into a gourmet restaurant. Flanked by pale limestone pilasters, whose lower parts are finely carved with rosettes and checkered patterns, the frame, also in light limestone, has two slender columns and a highly broken horseshoe arch. While the moldings of the latter are embellished with small flowers with four petals and ornaments in the form of knots, two rosettes garnish its spandrels. The two yellow leaves, equipped with two knockers, are embellished with studded arabesques, with varied compositions, which are arranged symmetrically. Arceaux, fish 🐟 and stellate motifs delight the eye and testify to the refinement of local domestic architecture.
