I'm super new to cryptocurrency, and don't normally share these types of posts, but I thought it would be fun to share a little story about something that happened late last night night on 4chan.
The Concept of OP
The site 4chan, hosts several image boards in an array of categories, but what makes it have appeal is the ability to remain perfectly anonymous while making, interacting and commenting posts. Because of this, there are some known things about OP, also known as the "Original Poster" of a thread.
- Op is a fa%%#$
- Op never delivers
Since no one will ever know who you are, many people create threads to fantasize, troll, and make otherwise outlandish statements that hold no basis in reality. Although mods exist, there is almost no limit to what can be shared there. Everything from anime, arts and crafts, to porn (of varying intensities and fetishes), rekt, and gore can be found throughout the threads. All of the posts expire from the site after a certain amount of time, but people are known to screencap, or otherwise archive threads on external sites.
Insomnia Strikes
I couldn't sleep too well last night, so I found myself reaching for my phone at around 3 am. This is Hawaii time, so at this point the west coast would be having breakfast. I wandered over to /biz/ which is in the same ball park as Reddit's personal finance board, with far less moderation, to entertain myself with threads full of shilling coins no one's ever heard of, everyone posting screencaps of their portfolios, people waiting to buy dips, and many discussions on several coins "mooning", or reaching their peaks. There was even one guy, who decided that he wanted to kill himself stop over some poor investment choices he's made recently, in an effort to "cash out big".
Although I browse several sites when learning about crypto or general things for that matter, 4chan felt more familiar, and more for people who want to get their feet wet, in forming discussion whether accurate or not. You will learn something there, through waves of toxic content. Tread with caution, as nobody is obligated to be honest, and take every piece of info with a grain of salt!
Gift Threads
Which isn't uncommon to come across on this site, where a thread starts with OP promising to do a giveaway for the community- On the spot. What I find amazing however, is that since everyone is anonymous, there is absolutely zero incentives to do something for a stranger you will never meet. This fact doesn't stop people from posting these types of threads on the daily. Browse long enough, and you'll find people claiming to give away BTC, money in Paypal, games on Steam, on top of random prizes. Sounds too good to be true? That's because it is.
Normally, to "win" one of these raffles, you type your receive address as a comment, and hit post. Every comment generates a post number, and if there is a special ending number (i.e. 69) or a GET which is the same numbers repeating at the end (i.e. 111), dubs, trips, sometimes quads, and you GET the prize. Pretty random set up since comment numbers increase by one for every comment, in every thread, on the whole site. I would imagine that this could be tracked, but for the normal guy- it's random. This is even used to determine what is made into a meme at times.
Most are Usually Fake
But everyone comments away in hopes that OP won't be a fa%%#$ today. Normally it takes 100 comments +, until someone finally receives a GET, but by then, OP is long gone, but more likely is sitting at his computer silently chuckling at himself for taking so many people with him on a ride to nowhere. At this point, the community gets pissed, or frustrated that everyone is constantly letting them down. Some fun discussions can take place in these threads, so it's not a complete loss.
Bitshares Give Away Thread
I came across a post, that was about a guy who was having a "sh%##$ day" for lack of better words, and decided that he wanted to host a giveaway until he was done on the toilet. I was one of the first to drop in and thought "why not?" time to grab a Bitshares alias, I chose "s-hell0" c: What was different about this thread was that he didn't want a GET, but instead, anyone and everyone who commented would win something. This sounds waaay too good to be true. After a few minutes, some people commented that they actually received the coins, my first thought was that this guy was same fa%%ing, he wasn't anywhere near a bathroom, and was pretending to be multiple people to convince others of authenticity (this does happen).
That wasn't until the transaction went through, and I became the new owner of 91 shiny Bitshares ($12). He posted the network link for people to track his transactions, and within minutes every person who commented also received an amount in a similar price range. There was even a "secret GET" who got 2,000 ($260) worth.
There was literally a guy somewhere in the world, trapped on a toilet, who dared to make a bunch of strangers super happy to cheer himself up. In total he gave at least $500 out to the some 25/30 people in his thread.
When he finished, he posted the following image to end everyone's adventures, with the post to expire shortly after. I hope that his butt feels better!
So here I am with $12 of Bitshares unsure of what to do. I have found this thread from @stan geared at helping noobs learn Bitshares, this will be where I start. I hope everyone enjoyed my little adventure :D If anyone would like to give me general tips, or thoughts on cryptocurrencies, I would appreciate it!
I also wanted to give a shout out to analyst @haejin, for being consistent in reporting a large number of coins. I bought some LBC (Library credits) at 20 cents, and now it's at 24. Thank you, your work helps out a lot of people!
buy zeph...or peerplays....hold...
Thank you!
Very nice, I'm glad it worked out for you, congrats on the BTS! 4chan is home to both some of the biggest assholes and nicest anons on the planet.
It makes it hilarious whenever the news refers to "anon" as hacking something (or whatever "anon" is doing.) Makes it pretty obvious most journalists have no idea what the hell they're talking about.
Hello @trending,
It was pretty chill, and everyone had a good time c: Yeah the goal is not to be one if you cannot handle! The same site that can't count to 10 is a team of highly skilled hackers lol
Thanks for dropping in,
shello
wow, 4chan hahaha...
Can be surprising at times~
