China restrained US spying by killing CIA informants ...

As of 2010, Beijing has sought to systematically dismantle US spying efforts by running, or arresting, at least 18 informants from that country, according to The New York Times.

Citing ten active and retired US officials who spoke with the NYT on anonymity, the paper said the current intelligence situation is one of the worst in decades in that country.

Officials can not tell whether the United States has been betrayed by an agent infiltrated by the Central Intelligence Agency, or whether China has been able to "hack" some program used by the agency to communicate with its agents abroad .

On the damage inflicted on one of America's most productive spy networks, there's no doubt: more than 10 CIA informants were killed between late 2010 and 2012, including one who was shot in the face of his colleagues in a clear warning To anyone else who might be working as a double agent, the paper explained.

In all, between 18 and 20 CIA sources in China were murdered, or arrested, according to two former intelligence officials consulted by the Times.

Spy hunting in China has been intense, reports the NYT, adding that almost every member of the US embassy in Beijing has been investigated at some point.

The CIA did not say anything about it.
