Second Brightest Nebula in the Sky - Dumbbell Nebula

in #contest7 years ago (edited)

This is a photo of Messier object 27, also called Dumbbell Nebula or Apple Core Nebula is a planetary nebula in constellation Vulpecula(fox), I took this photo on Astronomical Station Vidojevica in Serbia with 60cm Cassegrain telescope and 10 minutes long exposure time. It was filtered, colored and smoothed with imaging program MaximDL. Distance to this object is 1360 light-years away or converted to more familiar units, 12866593442709888 kilometers!

Dumbbell nebula is the second brightest planetary nebula in the sky, second only to the Helix Nebula in Aquarius. It can be seen using large binoculars, and some of its details are visible even in smaller telescopes. The best time of year to observe M27 is summer as it lies within the Summer Triangle (northern sky).

With this post I am starting a series of posts with beautiful objects in the Universe, and short explanation what it is. If you are in love with the colorful phenomena in space keep the track of these posts. If you happen to have an idea for a specific tag for the upcoming posts I would appreciate leaving it in the comment section.

now that is a long exposure of the past

All we are is dust in the wind...

wow that is really cool - I don't know much about astronomical photography, but it makes sense that you'd need to do lots of long exposures. What's the longest exposure you've had to do to capture something up there?

Well, for my msc thesis we observed neighbouring galaxy IC1613 with 5 images per 20 minutes exposure time. combining them in particular software gave us 100minutes exposition. :) Thats the biggest one I have worked with, hopefully in the future I will go for more :)

100 minutes!! That is crazy long! Even as a combined 5x 20 minute exposure is epic, hahaha

Do you have to have a really fancy camera that's specifically designed to do this type of photography? Sorry for all the questions, I just find this really interesting :)

It is crazy! :D Luckily for us we get to sit in the comfy and warm room (thank you technology) instead of spending times in a freezing cold nights. :)
I like answering thoughtful questions. :) well, usually all telescopes have mounted camera (some have two-three-four) depending what their goal is.
This 60cm telescope used this Apogee U42 and the blue thing is Peltier Cooling system it cools the CCD camera 25-40 degrees below zero.
Just to have better image and reduce the noise. :)
If this was helpful keep coming with questions or suggestions :)

only $45k MSRP! lol! well that is amazing - I know a lot about film cameras and photography cameras, but I've never investigated "Quantum Efficiency" cameras. but that makes total sense that it heats up enough to justify a cooling system of its own - that's a lot of power in there. Really cool, I'm looking forward to more of your posts!

100 freekin minutes?! whoaaa!!

Damn Svemirac! This is high on my wish-to-do-list-kind of photography! How the hell did you not get any star trails with such a long exposure time?

This is professional telescope, but even for amateur telescopes you can get auto-tracker which follows your desired object, and mounting camera focus will give you picture without trails, it is yet the simplest thing about the telescope equipment :)

ah yeah! Auto-tracker! And that tracker is attached to that telescope? shittt

crazy shit!!! orders auto tracker

Love astronomy, I was hoping in my lifetime they'd have visits to the moon at least, but it seems the human race is too preoccupied with finding new ways to kill each other :/

Just like Tom Waits said: "It's a sad and beautiful wor(l)d..."
While stepping on the Moon is quite tempting, I would be satisfied with 7 days on ISS. :) just to feel zero gravity, and see the Earth. :)

This was such an incredible photo! I'm always amazed at what is up there ;) I can't wait to see what more you have for us!!!! I've already heard from a lot of people that this was a a great post!!! (i guess it was a better choice than the beer making?!?!? LOLOLOL)

Well it was good both ways, and had very funny comments! Thanks for choosing me as a pirate haven in this round! see you around :)

Somebody did a big fart in space!

Really though, that is so cool. '12866593442709888 kilometers! ' God damn... That was a good line. 1360 light years didn't pack the punch :P

hahahahahahahahaha YES @svemirac - i see what you mean about the funny comments LOLOLOL

Wow! What a breathtaking picture!! I've always been amazed at our expansive universe and all of the beauty it beholds! Thank you for sharing!!

Phenomenal! It actually does look like an apple core. I had no idea you do this @svemirac; looks like I need to get to know you better in Buddy_Up ;) Came here for the Treasure Hunt, but I hope to follow this series of beautiful objects in the skies. Well done!

Yeah :) I will take some time off from discord and chats, and most likely steemit itself. but I guess I will be able to post few things per week. :)thanks.

Oh, you're taking time away? Everything ok?

yep. a little travel trip, or how we call it nowadays - steemit material :D

Another Astrophysicist :D I love it. I can never get bored of cosmic images.

Nebulae can be so mesmerising.

Cool dude!

Prepare yourself for the things to come Tesla! :)
Cheers!

I'm strapped in prepared ready to take off in the STEM rocket ahah. Let's do this!!!

Haters will say this is photoshopped lol couldn't resist. But this looks really beautiful but this screen can't ever compare to the witness though.

hahahaha good one! It was MaximDLed! no photoshop :P :D

If it's the Dumbbell Nebula, do your eyes get stronger by looking at it? :)

ha! haha, nice one. Well they tend to grow bigger and pop out from time to time if you do not eat enough carrots! :)

Wow the colours are amazing and quite unexpected! Very pretty picture and holy heck that's a lot of kilometers away!!!

Suuuuuuper cool!! I love seeing this because I am fairly new to the astrophotography game, but am obsessed... Just got a new telescope and tracker and am super keen to take it out! Still learning how to make it track :p I'll figure it out soon. So keen!

Grats on the shot! Seriously amazing :)

thanks!
Great, enjoy your telescope, and figure it out. So we can all watch some beautiful photos. :)

Man Svemirac, how'd you get the nebula to stay in place for a full 10 minutes! J/k =]

Well it there is a thing called auto-tracker for amateur telescope. This one is professional scientific telescope. It MUST be able to track things - you give him coordinates and fix the stars, the telescope adjust it's rotating speed with earth rotation + motion of the star in the sky. :) and this is yet the simplest thing about the telescopes :)

Wow what a beautiful image, we see many stars here in the sky which looks so beautiful at night but this is something else.
What causes the colours I wonder??

arghhhhhhh - i found ye!!!! :)

"... converted to more familiar units, 12866593442709888 kilometers!" - I trully love your sense of humour :D

BTW - great shot! Since recently I'm into astrophysics (though not always understanding it), I'll be looking at your profile regularly ;)

Thanks! :) You will see lots of upcoming spacey stuff.
Btw, that is the exact number of kilometers when you convert light years :) calculated it myself (obviously nnot using pen and paper). :D

I do not have doubts, that your calculation is correct ;)
For me, more familiar form is the one presented in light years, since the number is easier to remember :D

Wow. Are you an astrologer

nope. I am astronomer, big difference, we do science :)

Oh yeah. I see the difference now. :) Thanks.

Got my word for the treasure map :)

thanks for stopping by :)

The photo is so good, was even thinking it was photoshoped

up vote and resteem !

It is a beauty and a light to take our breath away, I also love astronomy, I recognize your talent.

I can't wait to see more!

Good continuation.

captain @dreemsteem! me and my wooden leg get out of the harbor -PORT SVEMIRAC !

Moj favorit u nebulama su Pillars of Creation iz orla :D

Odlicni su stubovi! Biće nešto i o tome u jednoj od budućnosti. :)
