Convicted spammer spared prison, used profit to pay for college

in #cybersecurity7 years ago (edited)

In a remarkable decision by a Pittsburgh Judge, Sean Tiernan age 29 was spared prison. He was investigated for using a botnet to spam and made money from this. The money he made from this he used to pay for college. He also confessed right away to the FBI investigators when caught.

This is a remarkable decision because usually hackers are not treated well by the system. Spammers typically receive similar poor treatment so for that reason this case is remarkable. This does not mean hackers who use botnets to mine Bitcoin or cryptocurrency will be spared prison like this very lucky Sean Tiernan but it does show that once in a while a judge is lenient.

wonderful and informative post. Thank you for sharing,
I Love the good work! best wishes.

Hackers may be criminals, but they usually have an amazing IQ. Instead of putting them in jail, maybe society can try to get something beneficial out of them.

I wouldn't be surprised one bit if the government is using some of these hackers while they are in prison to do work for them in exchange for something.

Wonderful post $$$$$$$$$ cowut is saileent

Hackers should just work for the government instead of doing things like these that could put them behind bars

As if hackers can just decide to work for the government lol. Ha. The government decides to lock hackers up most of the time and then a few token hackers are spared prison. I do agree with you that it's better to earn money you can keep than to earn money you'll lose in legal fees or to prison.
