History of Resetting America (every FOUR to EIGHT years)

Have you ever got into an argument about the last President who held the office before the current one and was met with the reply, "Well, he's not President anymore, you can’t blame him. You have to blame the one who's in office now." Sadly this argument has been a topic of conversation throughout the history of the United States of America. Every four to eight years we go through a process of a symbolic reset, where all the misdeeds of the last regime are transferred and seemingly forgotten, and the old policies are shifted and refocused on the new President. To bring this idea to light, I will start with the Vietnam era, where countless of Americans protest across the country on a war that they deemed unjust. Everything from the motive, to the nature of which the war was fought, not to mention, the many young American men who were unwilling drafted during that time. The blame was put on Lyndon B. Johnson, and because of the failure of that endeavor, he refused to seek reelection for a second term. Did he face any legal repercussion for the many lives lost during the conflict, or the many fabricated statistics his Generals to spew out to the media swaying public interest? No, he just simply retired to his ranch in Texas. Soon Vietnam became Nixon’s war, and the pressure fell onto him to end it, which took him some time of course, and we all know what happened to Nixon with the Watergate scandal, which the public forgot during the Gerald Ford years, where he pardoned Nixon of any wrong doing and set him on his way.
Can you name a President in our history who has been held accountable for the actions they took during their presidency after their term was over? I’m opening this up for discussion, because I can’t think of one. And the list of proven scandals go on, from Andrew Johnson’s reconstruction policies, which seemingly reversed Civil War efforts after Lincoln’s assassination, Ulysses Grant’s “peace” policies, which drove countless Native Americans from their homes, not to mention the massacres that took place during that era, Harry S. Truman’s decision to drop the two bombs on Japan, to Ronald Reagan’s contra affairs. And let’s not forget, the second war in Iraq, where George W. Bush and his team convinced us to get involved through the use of fear-tactics.
The basic form of this argument is “the Presidency of the United States is known as an entity” which means “No former President will be held accountable or face legal repercussions, both domestic or foreign for the title of office in which they do not hold anymore.” This simply means that the “entity” of the presidency shifts onto another person who now holds the title, or by layman’s terms, has inherited the other person’s garbage.
This has been a common practice throughout our history, and is the biggest threat to social reform as we move forward into the future. As long as the Reset of American leadership occurs, our plight for certain social issues will be drowned out and substituted for another cause, just as long as it keeps certain groups and factions divided. Soon, President Obama’s policies will be a thing of the past, and we’ll have to shift the blame to another President whether it’s Hilary Clinton or Donald Trump.
This government tactic, keeps us divided as a people, both in thought and ideology. Maybe we have grown too big as a Nation to enact real change. Maybe we have grown too divided in our values and beliefs, that social reform in America is just as a fictitious as our perception of “Freedom,” which is a topic all in itself.

Hope this topic enlightens,
