The Reminder - Short Story (Part 1)

Epilogue

It's 2:35 a.m. and Jason Sheriton is wide awake, finding it impossible to sleep - one of the side-effects of a murder interrogation.

-"You understand the severity of these charges, Mr. Sheriton. Your co-operation would make this easier on us all."

Jason shakes his head at Detective Harvey, who swivels a teaspoon in a cold cup of coffee, mimicking the whirlwind of emotions stirring up in his suspect.

The whirlwind rises - Jason bursts out.

-"I didn't do it! I know what it looks like, but for fuck sake, you're wrong about this!"

Grey walls are meant to be calming, in this moment they seem to be crushing him. Jason grabs at his hair, frustration peaking through his clenched fists in the form of greasy brown strands.

-"We have DNA, testimonies - hard evidence, Mr. Sheriton. Evidence that will see you a dead man in a few years. Now, best believe me, as things stand, there ain't a jury or judge this side of state whose gonna help you - the only person willing to help you is me, but you gotta talk."

Chapter 1

Monday mornings always carried a strange air in the exquisitely modern corridors of PK Creative Solutions. Some of the employees seemed as if they were still stuck on Sunday, lethargically typing away with blank expressions, others strode through the building with energy, intent, and purpose - Jason Sheriton was the latter, a well-groomed, relentlessly driven man who, at twenty-six, had climbed the corporate ladder faster than he cared to recall.

He walked with his chin up, his jacket stuck perfectly to the sleek figure of his body , his eyes were focused on his main objective - the conference center, and with it, a 3-million dollar client . Yes, today was a big day, he could feel it inside himself, in the core where all great moments are preempted.

-" Jason, Jason! Before you go in!"
A rosy cheeked intern called out, hurrying from behind her desk.
-"Now, Sally, you know I gotta be in that room in the next two minutes." Jason replied.

Sally was a true modern princess of a girl, but not the breed of queens, more the Cinderella type - full of beauty and charm, but one hell of a fighter. Jason had known her for many years, and found comfort in her recent employment at PK. Her tenacity, and sometimes obvious infatuation, made her a perfect side-kick to someone as bull-headed as he was.

Sally continued:
-"Some fresh meat waiting for you in there, real stiff though - so you better impress. You alright? You look tired, I hope you haven't been drinking over your pitch prep again!"

She grasped his hand, her gaze posing a question - perhaps this was a little too comfortable?

Jason brushed her off with a smile and carried on down the corridor, every step a recited mantra, every breathe clear and invigorating - this was his game, and he know how to play it.
