My Top Perfect Games for Halloween

in #gaming7 years ago (edited)

As many look for a more intense night, due to Halloween, ppl go for many current AAA horror games, which can be good, but these are more commercial horror experiences, standard to our times.

I for one am not into that horror type of scare, but do like atmosphere intensive, unsettling and forgotten games, so here is a list of games that are perfect for this occasion and offer quite the special experience.

1. Limbo + Inside

These are so well known for a reason :) Intense bleak atmosphere, feeling unsafe, surprises around each "corner"... perfect non-jump-scare but real intense games.

2. Black the Fall

Inspired by Limbo, yet the focus in on an oppressive atmosphere due to the setting being in the Communist Regime. This also has a more historic focus, due to the real events that are portrayed here and the gameplay is evolved.

3. The Cat Lady

Well, this is a lot more psychological, with a bit of paranormal and a lot more gruesome settings. It's a duzzie. This is maybe one of the most unsettling games out there.

4. The Swapper

Do you like SF?... Well, this is the setting for you. Philosophical plotline, isolated and atmospheric, and you will get to use one of the coolest puzzle game mechanic: clones.

5. Lone Survivor

As basic and crude this looks, graphical wise, as scary it is. I always wonder how can such a game create such an intense and scary atmosphere.

6. Bulb Boy

It starts cute... it is cute... but everything is not how it first appears. I found this game to be absolutely charming, but in a horrifying and gross way :) Again atmosphere is at its best.

7. Bendy and the Ink Machine

Not fully released yet, but this takes the old cartoons wonder and aesthetics and turns them on you. The atmosphere is pressing, jump scares are present, the setting is as original as you can get. You'll never look at cartoons the same way again.

8. Sanitarium

Well, this is a real old game (1998). A point and click that is not scary but excels at unsettling worlds, scenes, etc due to the subject, handling a psychological horror theme... Imagine a world created out of insanity – deformed children, ancient gods, ghosts from your past in the house inside of a water reflection. You are an asylum patient and you have just survived a car crash. A brilliant game.

9. Clive Barker's Undying

A horrifying FPS from 2001 romp of curses, strange, mad creatures, and family dysfunction gone terribly wrong. This is a charming horror for me due to the known haunted manor setting. Magic, weapons, eerie trips, bit of time travel and a weapon which scares it's user... yup in this game there is a weapon that will scare you more than the minions you face :)).

10. System Shock 2

There is also the remake of the original on gog, but I only played and finished the second one. Never regretted, one of the coolest experiences from 1999. For its time, this was one of the first true survival FPS game with a SF horror setting with RPG elements. The game will swallow you whole and get you completely immersed in the terrifying reality of an interstellar ghost-ship.
