Week 05 Reflection: Central Planning and Totalitarianism

in #gradnium3 years ago

The Road to Serfdom excerpt was well thought out, easy to follow, and well written from beginning to end. Each idea flowed into the next that built up the overall reading. I especially appreciated how it was broken up and not just a large amount of information in one large document. The overall topic of the excerpt was fascinating in a variety of aspects. Throughout my education in public high school, all we were ever told is that socialism, communism, and totalitarian are terrible forms of government and that it does not work. Reading this document allowed me to truly understand why it does not work and what people have tried in the past that has failed.

The document started with talking about the nature of planning and power in government then builds on those key topics to move onto individualism and all forms of totalitarian government. At this point in the reading, the audience should have a fair idea of the difference and some similarities between individualism and what socialism is. The audience also has an understanding of how the totalitarian government is structured along with this form of government’s focuses. With these topics in mind, the author goes on to explain what utopia is. It is this idea that focuses on freedom and equality, but freedom in this context is freedom from necessity which ultimately creates a limit in choices for the public. The next aspect that had various interesting points was about how ruthless people obtain power. It continues to explain the three main reasons why a large group that may have similar views are formed by the worst of society. The next three sections were about planning and the rule of law. Personally, these sections were not as interesting to me as the others. I did learn about socialist economic planning and how it is more circumstantial planning rather than planning for the future. The excerpt moved on to talk about the two kinds of security which are described as: having a set about of sustenance for everyone and having a standard of life, and the other is protection against a reduction in their earnings. The last section especially leaves you thinking. You are even able to consider if we are able to apply it to today’s world. Below the excerpt are images that represent the road to serfdom. These images helped me clarify all of the concepts from the simple images and short captions. The Road to Serfdom excerpt definitely allowed me to gain more detailed knowledge when it comes to why socialism or a totalitarian government does not work.
