As most educated people know, socialism may not be a necessarily complicated concept, but it does have many layers and aspects that can be difficult to understand. Essentially socialism is when the government controls the means of production, like factories and tools, to produce items for the good of the people based off of their current needs. Socialism shys away from profit and uses its items for use. This does sound like a great idea until you go further into the topic. To start people do not like being controlled. From a young age, when our parents tell us to take out the trash we are reluctant; it is in our human nature. Along with this logic, we know that people are going to be reluctant when the government claims they have the best interest in all of the people. There are several immediate things wrong with this statement. How do so many different people have the same collective needs? To start people grow at different rates so some families with children may need more clothes one year than others. One family may love hiking and need more quality shoes than others. A family that loves working out may need more food than others. The list goes on and on and on. One specific example that is very fascinating is from Benjamin Powell. He shows images that represent how much lower the quality of products are in socialist-style government compared to others. On his projector, he shows an Airbnb-style rental room and the other is a hotel ran by the government. The images clearly showed the difference and Powell used many adjectives like “crappy” to give a verbal image of the contrasts of the rooms. When he talks further he mentions the incentive. The fact is that there is very little incentive for government workers to excel at a job when the government is paying them the same wage either way. Why work harder when you earn the same barely working at all? This brings the incentive to those private homeowners to create a better room. He goes on and mentions other personal experiences about the lack of quality from lack of incentive in the socialist-style government ran countries. Yet, the main concern that people have about the government shouldn’t be capitalism or socialism; it should be the correct balance for the economy so people have an opportunity to thrive if they want to and not be prohibited because they are restricted of resources.
