I’m an Ophthalmic Plastic Surgeon

All the below statements in bold are the common misconceptions about my field

  • 1.BOTOX is poison, hence will ruin your body over time
BOTOX is the trade name for Botulinum Toxin which is a purified bacterial toxin taken from the bacteria Clostridium Botulinum. It is a neuro-toxin which when injected to the face, acts on the nerve endings of the facial muscles paralyzing it temporarily for 3–6 months. BOTOX was first successfully used in Ophthalmology by Dr. Alan Scott to correct squinted (crossed) eyes by injecting the toxin into the eye muscles. When the unexpected side effect of the toxin injection was shown to reduce skin wrinkles in the test subjects significantly, the cosmetic industry embraced this “side effect” with open arms.[1] It is unfortunate that because of its high demand in the aesthetic space, BOTOX has acquired a negative connotation among the general public. There are several medical indications for using BOTOX such as eyelid spasms, hemifacial spasms, Cervical dystonia, Chronic migraines, etc, among many other scores of medical indications.[2] In my own practice, the subset of BOTOX for cosmetic reasons are less than 1 in 20 times I need to use BOTOX on my patients. BOTOX only acts on the nerve endings of the muscles and has no long term harmful effects on the body. Some of the patients with debilitating spasms of muscles of the face or body need BOTOX every 4–6 months to get relief from pain and functional problems. I have patients who have been on BOTOX treatment for years without any harmful long term effect. So BOTOX is poison yes but not harmful to the body because the dose and location of injection is well controlled by the doctor.

  • 2.Plastic Surgery is bad for health because it changes the way people were born and so Plastic surgeons are immoral
Of course plastic surgery has its own risks and complications like any other surgery. However since most of these surgeries are planned elective surgeries and done on younger patients with less health problems, most of the plastic surgeries especially the aesthetic plastic surgeries are pretty safe. It is another matter that Aesthetic Plastic surgery is only a small part of Plastic surgery and overwhelming majority of plastic surgery work is functional in nature. Some examples of the functional reconstructive Plastic surgery are

  • Correction of Birth defects

  • Reconstruction after cancer removal

  • Reconstruction after suffering from trauma due to assault, work accidents or road traffic accidents, acid attacks

  • Restoration of function of body parts which aged. eg: Opening up the eyes increasing the visual field after Blepharoplasty in old people or correction eyelid malpositions due to senile loosening of eyelids.

These form the bulk of Plastic surgery and not the cosmetic indications that you hear of celebrities. Plastic surgeons perform an important function in the medical field are often wrongly vilified by ignorant people. These ignorant people also stigmatize people who get plastic surgery by making it feel evil.

  • 3.LASIK or refractive surgery “cures” Myopia
LASIK or any other refractive surgery only corrects the refractive error of the person so as to make the person spectacle free. Myopia is not a disease and refractive surgery does not “cure” it. A person having Myopia will continue to have myopia all through their lives even after LASIK-only they don’t need to wear glasses or contact lenses after surgery. Refractive surgery is a type of cosmetic surgery (even though some non-cosmetic indications exist) and not meant to cure any medical condition.

I never thought of LASIK as cosmetic but considering it does the same thing as glasses I supposed that would be the case. Thanks for sharing!
