My son went through hemorrhoidectomy after losing lots of blood, and we were not told or aware of the extent of suffering afterwards. My son would sit in bathtubs full of ice, so that the discomfort would hide some of the pain. Or he would just lie on the floor totally helpless, without even being able to cry.
Asking around, we found that surgeons often downplay the postoperative intense pain, because this may often prevent patients from going through unavoidable procedures. However, the downside is that besides being totally unprepared, the patient is quite worried that something very wrong is going on.
After searching the web, we found some sites where patients shared what they were going through after surgery, and knowing this was common and expected, made the pain a bit more bearable and a lot less worrying.
If anyone is going through this, here is one good link to check out:

In our particular case, the pain didn't lessen even after several months and we realized something was indeed wrong. We chose another surgeon who was more open and easier to speak with, and, thank G-d, the surgeon found an internal infection, that may or may not have been caused by the first surgery, cleaned it out and after several weeks my son pretty much recovered.
have a quick recovery!
