The water people and their palafitos
The people of the water or boat people, that is what Waraos means, are an indigenous Venezuelan ethnic group that lives on the water and this publication is about the structure of their dwellings and the camp where I was traveling while touring the Orinoco Delta.
Their houses are huts built of wood with Moriche palm roofs, this palm is the most abundant in this area and is a resource that is fully exploited, these houses are known as palafitos and their bases are logs buried in the water that resemble floating huts, the camp where I spent my stay is on the Orinoco River which is one of the most important in the world.

Las personas del agua o de embarcaciones, eso es lo que significa Waraos, son una étnica indígena venezolana que viven sobre el agua literalmente y esta publicación trata de la estructura de sus viviendas y del campamento donde estuve de viaje mientras recorría el Delta del Orinoco.
Sus casas son chozas construidas de madera con techos de palma de Moriche, esta palma es la que más abunda en esta zona y es un recurso que se aprovecha en su totalidad, a estas viviendas se les conoce como palafitos y sus bases son troncos enterrados en el agua que asemejan unas chozas flotantes, el campamento donde pase mi estadía está sobre el río Orinoco que es uno de los más importantes del mundo.
Of course, there is dry land, but as the Orinoco Delta is the jungle and there is a lot of rain and humidity, it is more comfortable to live in a house where the floor dries by itself and the water runs off, without walls and in coherence with the environment.
Por supuesto que existe tierra firme, pero como el Delta de Orinoco es selva y hay muchas lluvias y humedad, es más cómodo vivir en una casa donde el piso se seque solo y se escurra el agua, sin paredes y en coherencia con el ambiente.
The stilt houses at Orinoco Queen Camp
The main entrance is like a mini-port where the outboard motorboats and the curiae as (the indigenous people's boats) arrive. The floor, the foundations, and the structures are all made of wood that has to be renewed from time to time because it rots with water and termites. This is the tourists' hotel and one of the two that exist in the area since after the pandemic they were destroyed due to a lack of maintenance and resources. Orinoco Queen It has a total of 30 stilt houses that are adapted with covered walls, enclosed with mosquito netting, internal bathroom with sink, sink and shower with shower, inside double or single beds also with mosquito nets.

La entrada principal es como un mini puerto donde llegan las lanchas con motor fuera de borda y las curiaras que son las embarcaciones de traslado de los indígenas, el piso, los cimientos y las estructuras, todo es de madera que tienen que renovar cada cierto tiempo porque se pudren con el agua y las termitas. Este es el hotel de los turistas y uno de los dos que existen en la zona, ya que después de la pandemia se destruyeron por falta de mantenimiento y recursos. Orinoco Queen Tiene un total de 30 palafitos que están adaptados con paredes cubiertas, encerradas con tela metálica protectora de mosquitos, baño interno con lavamanos, poceta y ducha con regadera, adentro camas matrimoniales o individuales también con mosquiteros.
These cabins are connected with wooden corridors and there is a central environment which is the dining room and kitchen, as well as other recreational areas with games on chairs to observe nature. All the facilities have electricity because they have an electric plant that is turned off after 10 p.m. and is illuminated with handmade lamps that add a special beauty to the environment.
I felt like I was in a palace in the jungle, I never thought I would be in a place with so many comforts, that make tourists feel at home enjoying a wild and natural environment; the only thing missing was the internet connection, but then the trip would have lost the magic because the internet has the gift of distracting us from the simple and beautiful things that surround us, in this case, an environment that for a few days I could enjoy.
Estas cabañas están conectadas con corredores de madera y hay un ambiente central que es el comedor y la cocina, además de otras áreas de esparcimientos con juegos de sillas para observar la naturaleza. Todas las instalaciones tienen electricidad porque poseen planta eléctrica que después de las 10 de la noche es apagada y queda alumbrado con lámparas artesanales que añaden al ambiente una belleza especial.
Yo me sentía como en un palacio dentro de la selva, jamás pensé que estaría en un lugar con tantas comodidades, eso hace que los turistas se sientan en casa disfrutando de un ambiente salvaje y natural; lo único que faltaba era la conexión a internet, pero entonces el viaje hubiese perdido la magia porque el internet tiene el don de distraernos de las cosas sencillas y bellas que nos rodean, en este caso un ambiente que por pocos días podría disfrutar.
The palafitos of the Waraos
These are the real houses that are built with wooden stakes without walls and the only additional thing is the moriche palm roof, which is where the indigenous people live practically outdoors. It is amazing how many people can sleep inside these palafitos, entire families of grandparents, parents, children, and siblings, all under the same roof sleeping in hammocks or hammocks, that's all they need to live.

Estos son las viviendas reales que se construyen con estacas de maderas sin paredes y que lo único adicional es el techo de palma de moriche, allí es donde habitan los indígenas prácticamente a la intemperie. Es asombroso la cantidad de personas que pueden dormir dentro de estos palafitos, familias enteras de abuelos, padres, hijos y hermanos, todo balo el mismo techo durmiendo en hamacas o chinchorros, eso es todo lo que necesitan para vivir.
They will not have many material goods, but there is plenty of great river sunrises and beautiful sunsets.
No tendrán muchos bienes materiales, pero les sobra grandiosos amaneces del río y bellos atardeceres.
