Growing up at home at dinner time, my mother would make us eat everything that was on our plate. There are thousands starving in Africa that would give their left arm to have that would be her standard reply if you dared to leave something on your plate.
Of course now it would be not good parenting as you should let little Johnny do whatever he wants or so it would appear to this grumpy arse.
However it did instil values into me.
I love leftovers
I make no bones about it, but I love to cook and I love to go shopping (food shopping that is) and see what is on offer or discounted.
There is nothing better than getting a bargain and knocking something up for dinner, or throwing it into the freezer for a rainy day...
We call them whoopsies
We have the sell by and use by dates on most foods and by law they can't sell produce after the sell bydate, so come the evening or even earlier the shops will discount their fresh prouduce.
It does means bargains can be had.
These orange labels are from Lidl's one of the supermarkets here and they have handy labels telling you the discount.
These discounted products are generally known as whoopises
I quite often goto a shop in the evening and pick up whoopsies for use the next day.
When it comes to food and cooking I just cook whatever is available and knock something up.
I have never been a slave to recipes, so will knock up whatever I feel like...
Some of you know I am putting a site together and part of it is money saving tips and as part of this research I found a site called Olio.
I am going to share a fluffing frightening fact...
⅓ of food produced globally is wasted – and half of that happens in the home
That is pardon the French , fucking outrageous, 30% of all food is wasted and over 50% of that is in the home...
Seriously people need to take a grip.
So with Olio, volunteers goto supermarkets and collect these whoopsies I told you about, and then registered app members can then collect it free from volunteers.
I have discovered there is someone that volunteers who is 0.2 miles away so I shall go and have a look.
The only drawback is that you collect after 10pm.
Have you heard of the Olio app
Or is there some similar app that you use in your country?
I know with the cost of living going up and fluffing up every penny counts, so ways to save are needed. When you save money and help save our environment then it is a win-win for everyone!
When I try it out I shall report back on my findings!
Thanks for visiting and have a wonderful new week!

I never heard about Olio app before. By the way I think it can be useful for people in my country. Also I should say that I don't know any similar app available in my country but maybe we have such one. As one method to save food here we have combined shopping when people gather with others to buy something what they need but it has big pack and the y need just a peace of this product.
Oh that is a great idea to save costs and share products too!
That's a pretty cool system. My wife and I bought a food saver vacuum sealer a while ago and that helps us stretch things quite a bit further. My wife doesn't usually eat left overs, but I practically live off them through the work week for my lunch!
Oh yes I make Mrs T's lunch and in the winter it is leftovers she will heat in the work microwave.
The food saver vacuums are great we used to use one but it got lost in our moves.
Sounds great but also a bit stressful.
So the idea is you'd go to the volunteers to get the foodstuff that's just a say or to before it's sell by date for free?...
The volunteers pick up the food from the shop, then they take a pic put it on the app and you say you want it then go collect it.
It's a sweet deal.
I learned from your mother's way of handling children. You say that wouldn't be good parenting now? Do you agree to that trend in this generation?
Wow, the Olio app sounds super helpful. I doubt that we have something like that in my country but I promise you, a lot of people over here would absolutely appreciate something like that.
It's basically free food. But the fact that food can only be delivered after 10pm is kind of sketchy. Try to be careful when you go to check it out.
Have a good one!
After 10pm is fine, you have to register in the app and be verified before you are allowed to know where the volunteers are etc.. The volunteers pick up the food from the shop, then they take a pic put it on the app and you say you want it then go collect it.
It's a sweet deal.
Alright
Sounds good
That's a nice system Ed, I don't think we have anything like that here. Shocking about the stats!
I hate to see food go to waste. My Mom worked at Woolworths many years ago, staff could buy the food that would expire the following day. My favourite was their smoked salmon pate and cakes.
Nowadays most of our food stores have a shelf for food about to expire, at a fraction of the original price.
I'm shocked at how much food some of our guests waste; we freeze it and put it out on bin day in a separate packet, same with our leftovers. I enjoy leftovers for lunch the next day, but by the 3rd day, it's stored in yogurt or margarine tubs. I was shocked the first time I learnt that the bin scratchers actually take that food! , Another place where tons of food is wasted is at the airport, they're not allowed to donate it! Awful, when one thinks how many people go to bed hungry at night!
I look forward to seeing that site you're putting together Ed, that's a great project!
I also don't like wasting food. Eat whatever leftover that is. I feel bad every time I was ask to throw food they don't like😐
