I am pleased to show you a bird that is not very common to be seen in the parks - meet the Coal Tit.
The coal tit lives in the mountains, preferably in coniferous woodlands and in winter comes in the parks to search food. Feeds on insects and spiders as well as seeds. In my language it is called black or pine tit, because of the black head and the places where it lives. Indeed my first encounter was in the park where there are conifer trees and the tit was hopping there, very hard to photograph. First images were blurred. So glad I had the chance to see it in the open few days ago.
It has black bib and black head with white cheeks, pale plumage and what makes it distinctive is the white stripe on top of the head that goes down to the back.
I haven't seen the similar birds such as willow and marsh tit, but this white stripe is special trade mark of the coal tit and one cannot be mistaken by recognizing the bird.
The coal tit is smaller than the great tit and has similar call.
When it feeds, it shows some acrobatic skills.
The head has shiny black colour for the adults, while it is not yet such for the juveniles.
I don't know how long this little bird will stay in our park. Perhaps I will have another chance to see it...
...before it hops and flies away.
It's time to say goodbye to my little friend and really hope to see it again.
